Mexico travel diary (extra long) | One month back to Tulum part 1

24/01/2026 | Reageer

Hi everyone! Welcome to a new travel diary ✨This was already my 9th time in Mexico, and honestly… it’s starting to feel like coming home. My days here have slowly become more like “daily life,” which makes this place even more special to me.
Hi allemaal!

Day 1 – Amsterdam, Cancun & Tulum – 11-11-2025

Last November/December I had my yearly unpaid leave again – something I truly look forward to every year. The trip started off beautifully: I got on a KLM flight last minute, had the loveliest crew, coffees from business class, great chats in the cockpit, and even made a new friend – the co-pilot. Everything just seemed to fall into place that day. I even ended up with a better seat because someone wanted to swap to sit next to his wife. Small things, but it really felt meant to be. And when I finally saw Mexico from the plane… I couldn’t hold back my tears 🥹

When I arrived, my sweet friend Cyni picked me up and we went straight for ceviche at our favorite spot, La Negra Tomasa. We made plans, caught up, and by coincidence there’s also a colleague from Transavia here. It truly feels like a beautiful time is ahead of me.

Grateful. Truly. 🤍

Dankbaar. Echt. 🤍

Day 2 – Tulum – 12-11-2025

My first morning already started perfectly. I had a month-long collaboration with Tulum Bike Rental (which I can truly recommend to everyone – renting a bike in Tulum is the best), and I woke up feeling incredibly rested at Hotel Babel, a beautiful boutique hotel where I also started my second collaboration of this trip.

I quickly hopped on my bike and rode to Nimeño in La Veleta – in my opinion one of the best coffee and lunch spots in all of Tulum. Funny enough, I ran into a girl I know there, and she asked if I could sit down as a model for some content for the café. As a little gift, they covered my breakfast, which was such a sweet surprise. I had a cappuccino and the most delicious acai bowl.

After that, I headed to the beach with Cyni and spent some time at Lula Beach Club. To end the day, I grabbed food at my all-time favorite burrito place, Burrito Amor, and then went to visit my friends Daniela and Marcelo, who literally live next to my hotel – and ended my day at the hottub at Babel.

One of those simple, perfect days 🤍🌴

Mijn eerste ochtend begon meteen perfect.

Day 3 – Tulum – 13-11-2025

This day started magically again, but very early. Because of the jet lag I always wake up early here – and honestly, in Mexico I really love that, since it allows me to make the most out of the day.

I was invited for a shoot at my hotel with the same photographer I worked with back in April, which made it even more special. After that, it was time to check out and have breakfast in La Veleta at Otti, together with my German friend Jana before she had to go to work.

Not long after, my sweet friend Daniela picked me up and we headed to the beach. We chose Ikal, one of my favorite beach clubs/hotels near Public Beach, close to Playa Maya. The entrance prices here change constantly – it used to be free, then 60 pesos, then even 420 pesos (which honestly hurt), and for a moment it made me – and many others – wonder if Tulum would still be doable. Now it’s 120 pesos, around 6 euros, and free on Sundays. That really helps restore some trust, especially since many people started skipping Tulum because of these prices, combined with the seaweed problem and the taxi mafia, which has heavily affected the local economy.

At Ikal, I brought my new camera for the first time. After ten loyal years, my old one started showing its age, so I decided to invest in a newer version of the same model – and finally start using my portrait lens that had been waiting in my drawer for years.

I ended the day at my new collaboration and studio: Homa Tulum, deep in the jungle.

Day 4 – Tulum & Playa del Carmen – 14-11-2025

Today, another special day was on the planning – I was heading back to Playa del Carmen. From Centro, I decided to take a colectivo, a local minivan used as public transport. It costs around 30 pesos (about €1.50) for the whole ride to Playa – super efficient, although both going there and coming back it always takes a bit of searching to find the right spot to get on.

Playa del Carmen is one of my favorite places in Mexico. I hold so many precious memories here. Unfortunately, due to a very sad and unfair reason, I am no longer friends with that group of people, and I hadn’t been back here since. Walking through Playa brought back the beautiful memories, but also a few painful ones. It’s also one of the very first places where I ever made memories in Mexico, which makes it even more meaningful to me.

I met up with my Canadian friend Rita, whom I met in Colombia in 2022. We had breakfast at Choux Choux, my favorite breakfast spot in Playa del Carmen, and she treated me. It felt so good to see her again after meeting in Canada the year before and to catch up properly. How special that we’ve now seen each other in three different countries.

After that, I went to see my colleague Meike, who happened to be in Mexico at the same time. We had another coffee together and walked around Playa for a bit. After a small struggle finding the colectivos again (note to self: near Chedraui, close to Walmart), I headed back to Tulum.

There, Cyni and Leon picked me up – with my bike in the trunk, so I wouldn’t have to cycle back in the dark.

Day 5 – Tulum – 15-11-2025

One of the things I love most about Mexico is waking up early, taking my time to freshen up, and then enjoying a long breakfast by myself at one of the many lovely breakfast spots in Tulum.

This time I went back to Harttoo, because Yocelynn works there – a very sweet Mexican girl I met in 2024. As a little surprise, she treated me to a cappuccino, an incredibly delicious chocolate cinnamon roll, and a handwritten note with a bracelet. I honestly couldn’t help but tear up. A letter I will always cherish, and one of the kindest gestures I have ever received from someone.

After breakfast, I met up with my friends Cyni, Leon, and Boris to go to Akin (Tulumania) beach club, where they had a gig. We spent a big part of the afternoon there, and Cyni and I took lots of photos.

To end the day in a cozy way, I treated Cyni to a warm hot chocolate, and later the three of us – Cyni, Leon, and I – had a movie and pizza night at their apartment in Aldea Zama.

One of those days that ends as softly as it began 🤍

Day 6  – Tulum – 16-11-2025

One of my favorite breakfast spots in Tulum is Raw Love. I highly recommend the cacao bowl with extra peanut butter, together with the Power Brew (ask for it warm). In my opinion, it’s not only the most beautiful, but also the most delicious smoothie bowl place in Tulum. You can find it in Centro.

Since Daniela hasn’t been living in Tulum for very long yet, Jana and I thought it was a must to have breakfast here together with the three of us.

Later, Cyni and I headed to the beach again and settled at Pancho Villa, one of my regular spots. A big recommendation here are the aguachiles – a fresh and spicy fish dish, big enough to share. We had it together for lunch.

After a few hours of swimming and sunbathing, we decided to meet up again with Daniela, Marcelo, and Jana at Gitano Beach, where Jana works. Daniela was playing there as well, so I took some nice photos of her and of course stayed to support her.

To end the day, Cyni, Leon, and I had dinner – as we often do – at La Negra Tomasa, where I ordered my usual: frito de atún.

Day 7  – Tulum – 17-11-2025

Daniela, Marcelo, Jana, and I all happened to have no plans on the same day – the perfect excuse to spend it together.

My day started with breakfast at La Norteña, a spot in La Veleta known for Northern Mexican food. Dani and Mars insisted that I had to try it with them. What stood out the most to me was the café de olla, now officially my favorite coffee. A traditional coffee with spices like anise, cinnamon, and cloves, served in a little jarrito, a Mexican clay cup. I also had delicious barbacoa – pulled beef in tacos. Such a good place to visit.

After that, we decided to go to a cenote, one of my favorite activities in Mexico. I had already visited Cenote Zazil-Ha in 2024, but it was so much fun to experience it together this time. The entrance fee was now 400 pesos (around €19), while last year it was still 250 pesos – prices in Tulum really change all the time. We dove, swam, laughed, and made lots of underwater videos. It was such a beautiful day with the four of us.

Next, we went to Tienda de Miel in Mercado Gómez, a little shop selling handmade honey products – something you often find in hotels and Airbnbs in Tulum. We all stocked up on Maya honey products, and I was so happy with what I bought.

After that, we went deeper into the jungle to visit some friends of Marcelo and Daniela, and then continued to my new stay. That day I started a collaboration with Villa Hunab-Ku – without a doubt the most beautiful villa I have ever stayed in.

The villa has five bedrooms, a swimming pool, a gym, a large kitchen and living room, and a huge rooftop terrace. That evening, while sitting in the bathtub on the balcony of the master bedroom, I cried from gratitude. That a trip in 2022 could eventually lead me to a moment like this… it feels unreal sometimes.

This was truly my favorite day of the entire trip. 🤍✨

Daarbij at ik heerlijke barbacoa: pulled beef in taco’s.

Day 8  – Tulum – 18-11-2025

Now that I was staying in Aldea Zama, I was within walking distance of Cyni and Leon’s apartment. It honestly felt like I lived here. Aldea Zama is one of Tulum’s residential areas and, in my opinion, one of the safest and best maintained.

I started my morning in this incredible villa. I’m so in love with this place that my entire Instagram is basically filled with it. I also shot a lot of outfit photos here. I woke up feeling so well-rested, but above all deeply grateful and blessed to experience opportunities like this since my first trip to Tulum in 2022. That journey truly changed my life. So if you’ve ever been looking for a sign to start solo traveling… maybe this is it for you.

On my bike from Tulum Bike Rental (iBike Tulum – @bike.tulum), I cycled to Nimeño Zama. Nimeño has several locations around Tulum, which is so convenient. I ordered their sourdough (honestly the best sourdough bread I’ve ever had) with avocado and egg, plus their delicious cappuccino. The staff there is always so kind and hardworking too. Small tip if you’ve never been to Mexico before: tipping is very normal here, similar to the US – at least 10%.

By coincidence, I also ran into Boris and his little dog. He’s joining us tonight for a barbecue at my villa with Cyni and Leon.

After taking some beautiful photos in the villa with my new camera – shot by Cyni – we headed back to Ikal. Something I learned the hard way (and could have saved me a lot of money): the park is free if you arrive by bike. The 120 pesos entrance fee only applies if you come by scooter or car.

At Ikal we swam, sunbathed, and enjoyed a coffee by the beach. Afterwards we relaxed at my villa and did some grocery shopping for the barbecue that evening. It was such a cozy day with the four of us. And to end the night, we even played Mario Kart on my TV.

When you stay in a place this beautiful, you just want to share that happiness with the people you love. 🤍

Day 9  – Tulum & Cancun – 19-11-2025

Today I traveled back up to Cancún, where I would stay for one night before my early flight to Guatemala the next morning. In just over a week I would already be back in Tulum, but Guatemala was so high on my list that I decided to do it in the middle of my month. With a small ache in my heart, I checked out of the beautiful villa where I had stayed for two nights. From hostels in 2022 to super villas now – sometimes I still can’t believe it. I feel incredibly grateful for all this space and beauty around me.

For breakfast I went to Liefs, a cozy spot between Aldea Zama and Centro run by Dutch owners. I love coming here – great food and I enjoy supporting fellow Dutchies abroad. It’s also a nice tip if you’re vegan. I had coffee there with Peter, the owner of Hunab, a kind Canadian who wanted to meet me in person as a creator and told me about his projects and possible future collaborations.

After that I ran a few errands: returning my bike and leaving my personal belongings at Cyni’s place, since I would travel to Guatemala with only a backpack and a small bag and return to Tulum afterwards (so convenient). Then we went to Playa Paraíso for one last dose of sunshine before she dropped me off at the ADO bus station. Because of a small booking mistake, I was able to change my ticket for free – I even got some money back.

Due to traffic, the bus ride to Cancún center took almost three hours, but I actually enjoyed finally seeing the city instead of skipping it again. I stayed at Nomads Hotel, close to the bus station. My roommates were incredibly sweet and we clicked instantly – that’s one of the things I love most about hostels, it feels like a little boutique-style summer camp.

That evening, my camera let me down: my lens broke. Of course it was frustrating for a moment, but I quickly shifted my mindset to I still have another lens and good travel insurance. And on we go.

At the hostel restaurant I met Kalle, a lovely guy from Ulm in Germany (where I coincidentally have family). We had dinner together and talked for hours. Later, we had drinks on the rooftop with Esteban, a French solo traveler. I immediately regretted only staying one night in Cancún – you always meet the nicest people right when you’re about to leave.

Day 10  – Cancun & Guatemala –  20-11-2025

The day had arrived: time to head to a big destination on my bucket list – Guatemala. Close to Mexico, yet never visited before. Country number 29.

I asked Esteban and Kalle to join me for breakfast at Zereno, so I could spend a little more time with them on my last morning in Cancún. Around 7:45 a.m. they showed up – unexpected, but so nice. They even carried my backpack and bag, true gentlemen.

During breakfast I tested my portrait lens (the only one still working) and realized it’s actually much better than the one that broke. A blessing in disguise.

After coffee they walked me to the ADO station, helped with my luggage, and we said goodbye. Then I continued to the airport, on my way to a new adventure and a beautiful new destination. ✨

The only person in charge of giving you everything you want in life - is yourself 🍃

My little place of tranquility 🍃 - back in November at @homatulum | I got to stay here for 4 nights on my own in a guarded studio, and enjoyed my time in the Tulum jungle.

Did you know I filmed all of this myself and with a tripod? ✨

When a place fits your aesthetic ✨🍃
Hotel Babel, you understood the assignment. @babel.tulum

Tulum energy. Calm soul. Perfect details.

Hotel Babel felt like home the moment I walked in.
Quiet mornings, beautiful details, jungle air and that soft Tulum magic.

Saving this one in my heart.

POV: You get to stay at your dream villa in Tulum 🌴
Villa Hunab-Ku @villa_hunab_ku 🍃

Imagine having your own dream villa at your favorite place in the world!

I had an amazing 4 night stay at this incredible villa. A villa perfect for a bachelorette, family visit, party or lucky me - for myself!

This beautiful place has 5 bedrooms. My personal favorite was the Bali master bedroom - which I chose to sleep in - and the Zen bathroom - A Japanese style bathroom with a yoga garden.

Would you stay here with your friends?

(Swipe) The Souls of Guatemala & Mexico Nov/Dec 2025 🪽🐦‍🔥 I’m beyond grateful to have a lot of close and also new friends and acquaintances from around the world and can call Tulum my second home.

If I didn’t go to México on my own back in May 2022, my life would have been completely different.

I’m extremely grateful (and privileged) to be able to travel the world as a WOMAN on my own. Although I still live with my parents as in my country it’s hard to afford housing as a single person - I count my blessings and use that form of ‘space’ in my favor as a form of freedom.

The more I travel, the more gratitude I preach and feel, but also realize how only a small group of people (mainly women) is able to go out and explore.

I started solo travelling back in 2017, and after 8 years, I and have a big worldwide group of close friends and lifechanging experiences.

One of the first things I have learned from travelling is that your soulmates don’t need to have a similar zipcode.

Thank you all for existing 🤍🪽

Haven’t been able to take pics with everyone or tag them! Still love you equally x
