Mexico Travel Diary | Midweek back in Tulum

12/04/2025 | Reageer

This was officially my shortest trip to Mexico ever — just 5 nights over the span of 6.5 days. And yet… it felt like coming home. I know what you’re thinking: “You flew across the world for just a few days?” But for me, Mexico isn’t just a destination. It’s a feeling. A memory. A part of me.

When I told people about my trip, many were surprised. But what most don’t know is that Mexico has been my safe space for years. A place where I always return to reset and recharge. Where I’ve built deep friendships that stretch across continents. This time, a group of my international girlfriends happened to be in Tulum again — and I couldn’t pass up the chance to be part of that reunion.
Solo traveling has given me so much. It’s not just about the places — it’s about the people you meet along the way. And somehow, the universe keeps bringing us back to each other.

This trip was a little different. Shorter than ever, but deeply fulfilling. Right after, I had a three-day modeling booking in Germany, which I couldn’t and didn’t want to skip. Plus, this was my last chance to fly IPB with KLM to Cancún before they paused the route at the end of March. So everything aligned. It just felt right.

A family acquaintance came along on this trip too — she was nervous about doing her first solo travel and felt safer knowing I’d be nearby. Sadly, she remained quite anxious throughout. And that really made me reflect… because my own experience of Mexico has been the complete opposite. Warm, vibrant, welcoming and full of life. That’s why I love sharing these stories — to show just how much beauty this country holds.
This was actually my 7th time in Mexico, and somehow it keeps getting better.

Solo reizen heeft me zoveel gebracht.

Day 1 – 22-03-2025 – Amsterdam & Tulum

The trip already started on a high note: I got upgraded to Premium Comfort, and the flight was super empty and peaceful. The poke bowl I had for breakfast after landing? Genuinely delicious. And then the sun — oh, the sun — waiting for me like an old friend.

We hopped on a bus to Tulum, and I checked into my all-time favorite hostel: Meteora. It felt like coming home. Cinthia, who’s become a dear friend over the years, greeted us with cappuccinos. Since I’ve worked with them a few times before, I got an amazing private room upgrade for just a fraction of the price. The little gestures like that? They mean everything.

My family acquaintance stayed in that night, but I went straight out with Cyni, another lovely soul I met in Tulum. She picked me up and we went for dinner at La Negra Tomasa, one of my favorite local spots. We laughed, shared stories, and it was as if no time had passed at all.

And that’s what Mexico is for me. A place where I feel myself again. Where I breathe deeper. Where life feels lighter. Even in just five days.

Waar ik me licht voel. Zelfs in vijf dagen.

Day 2 – 23-03-2025 – Tulum

Today was one of those days where everything just flowed — light, vibrant, and full of little moments that made my heart full. The morning started with breakfast at Raw Love in downtown, a spot my travel companion really wanted to check out. I had the cacao bowl and the power brew — both delicious, and it felt so good to be back in that peaceful jungle garden atmosphere.

After breakfast, we hopped on our bikes and cycled to SFER IK, the iconic art museum at Azulik. Can you believe I’ve been to Tulum six times and never visited before? This time, I was finally going — and meeting up with my beautiful Brazilian friend Aline, who had been dreaming of seeing it too.

SFER IK is just a short bike ride from downtown, on the way to the hotel zone past Papaya Playa. Entry is 400 pesos (around €20), and honestly, worth every peso. I rented my bike through Tulum Bike Rental, which I really recommend — great prices compared to many places in town. The museum itself was such an experience. The air was filled with swirling copal smoke, creating an almost mystical atmosphere. It gave me the chance to capture some incredible, dreamy photos — pure magic through my lens.

And then, something unexpected: we met Abraham, a Colombian guy with the most beautiful energy — and an incredible sense of style. Effortlessly cool, calm, and kind. The three of us clicked instantly, like we’d known each other for years. I live for those spontaneous travel connections that feel like soul recognition.

After the museum, Aline, Christy and I changed outfits and went for coffee at Dos Ceibos, a beach club in the hotel zone where — little tip — there’s no minimum spend. Yes, places like this still exist in Tulum. We had our toes in the sand, sipping coffee with the ocean in front of us… until the rain came softly rolling in. So we headed back downtown and wrapped up the day with dinner at La Negra Tomasa, joined once again by lovely Abraham. It was a day full of art, connection, laughter, and little doses of magic — the kind you only find when you travel with an open heart.

Elke peso waard.

Day 3 – 24-03-2025 – Tulum

The morning of my short trip started off beautifully. I had a lovely conversation with sweet Cinthia, and then decided to go for a solo breakfast at Harrttoo — a relatively new breakfast spot owned by the same people as La Negra Tomasa. I really love the food here, and the coffee is genuinely great. By chance, I was greeted by the same sweet waitress from when I visited a few months ago. She actually remembered me and came over with the warmest smile. Later, we even exchanged Instagrams. Such a kind soul.

I ordered the chocolate pancakes, which are covered in a layer of raw, unsweetened cacao sauce. I absolutely loved it — the portion was just right, not overly sweet, and the bitter cacao gave it a beautiful balance. I’ll definitely be coming back here next time I’m in Tulum.

Later, my dear friend Cyni picked me up and we drove to Lula, a beach club in the hotel zone where you don’t need a minimum spend for a sunbed. I find the atmosphere there incredibly relaxing — it somehow gives off a soft Scandinavian vibe. We spent a few hours just enjoying the sun, and of course, I started to tan immediately. That afternoon, I stayed with Cyni and Leon at her apartment. We ran a few errands together — groceries, picking up packages, some household bits. Simple things, but they made me feel like I was living in Tulum rather than just visiting. There’s something really grounding about that.

Around six o’clock, Cyni and I got changed and went out for dinner at Burrito Amor, where we met up with Christy, who had really been wanting to try it. Normally I go for my usual shrimp burrito, but this time, on Cyni’s recommendation, I ordered the rib eye burrito. It was delicious. Burrito Amor is definitely one of my go-to spots in Tulum.

Later that evening, I went with Abraham to La Pizzine, since it was his last night and it’s such a nice place to meet people. And then, completely unexpectedly, I ran into my friend Felipe there. I hadn’t seen it coming at all — but that’s what I love about Tulum. The spontaneity. The way people cross your path again, just like that.

You’re back!” — zo’n hartelijk moment.

Day 4 – 25-03-2025 – Tulum

Today was Abraham’s last day in Tulum, so we really wanted to grab one more breakfast together. I suggested we go to Botanica — a super cute breakfast spot I definitely recommend. Little tip: they only accept cash, so be sure to bring some with you. Also, their coffee is really good. I had the healthy Botanica omelet and a cappuccino. Last time I tried the peanut butter toast, which I would also highly recommend. It was such a sweet, calm morning — really lovely to share that moment with dear Abraham before he left.

In the afternoon, I had to check out of my place because I was moving to a new Airbnb. Aline and I had planned to visit Cenote Zemway, which had been high on my list. As luck would have it, I got a ride on the back of a scooter from a kind Canadian hostel guest from Meteora, so the three of us headed there together. The Yucatán Peninsula is full of cenotes — literally thousands — and I think this was number twelve (or more!) for me. Swimming through the caves with Aline was such a beautiful experience.

Afterwards, I checked back into my favorite Airbnb: Acacia. This time I got a discount, since I’ve collaborated with them before. But to my disappointment, I found out they’re closing down soon, which makes me genuinely sad — this place has been one of my absolute favorites in Tulum and one I always recommend.

That evening, I got ready in my lovely, spacious little home for a night out with Cyni and Leon. We had dinner at Checkpoint Ciao, in the hotel zone — and the pasta I had was honestly so delicious. We ended the night as guestlisters at beach club Vagalume, enjoying the vibe and music under the stars on the beach.

Day 5 – 26-03-2025 – Tulum

This morning, I had a breakfast collaboration with Gitano Beach, where I was allowed to bring a guest to enjoy a relaxed breakfast by the sea. I invited Aline, because I really wanted to spend this last full day with her. We sat by the large sliding window, overlooking the beach, sipping coffee and enjoying a slow, peaceful morning. It was so nice to catch up just the two of us. The breakfast was just right — tasty, light, and not too heavy.

Gitano is truly my favorite beach club in Tulum. For the hotel zone, I find the prices very reasonable. A sunbed is 1000 pesos (around €45), and you can spend that full amount on food and drinks. Today, Aline and I got to stay and enjoy the day freely. We took some beautiful photos, meditated, and had some lovely conversations.

Afterwards, I went back to my Airbnb to freshen up a bit, grabbed a smoothie at Raw Love, and then Cyni and Leon picked me up for a villa party in La Veleta. Later that evening, I joined them for the first time at one of their DJ sets at Obsediana in downtown — such a fun way to end the day.

Gitano is zonder twijfel mijn favoriete beachclub in Tulum.

Day 6 & 7 – 27-03-2025 & 28-03-2025 – Tulum & Amsterdam

The very last day of my Tulum trip had arrived. And honestly? It didn’t feel as short as it sounds. I lived every day so fully that it felt much longer in the best possible way. I had invited all my Tulum girlfriends for a final morning together, but in the end, only a few could make it. It turned into a lovely and meaningful moment with Tanya (Cyni’s mom), Aline, and me. We had deep, honest conversations at Holistica about God, life, and our soul’s path. It felt grounding, vulnerable, and exactly what I needed to close this trip.

Afterwards, we walked through the Art Walk at Holistica — such a fun, peaceful activity that’s also completely free. You follow a small forest path filled with art installations and little surprises. Highly recommend it if you’re looking for something creative and calming to do in Tulum. After that, Aline kindly helped me check out of my Airbnb and brought me to the ADO bus station. Pro tip: I always buy my bus tickets online in advance — it saves a lot of time and unnecessary stress.

At the airport, it got a little intense… The flight was heavily overbooked, and I managed to get the very last seat back to the Netherlands. Thankfully, it all worked out. A few hours later, Christy and I were picked up by her parents — and just like that, we were home again. Tulum, as always, flew by. But its energy? That stays with me for a long time.

Every time I visit Tulum, I discover something new — yet it always feels like coming home. I hope these tips help you experience the true side of Tulum: stylish, slow, and full of little bits of magic.

Special story 🌷🇳🇱 My great grandfather who was a fighter in the resistance (Het Verzet) 🕊️

May 4th and 5th in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, May 4th is Remembrance Day, when we pause to honor all Dutch victims of war and the freeing of the country. At 8:00 PM, we observe two minutes of silence in memory of those who lost their lives in World War II and in subsequent conflicts and peacekeeping missions. On May 5th, we celebrate Liberation Day, marking the end of the German occupation in 1945. It’s a time for gratitude, reflection, and appreciation of our freedom. To keep remembering how important this day in history is and how freedom is a human right.

For me, this time holds a deeper, personal meaning. My great-grandfather was a prominent resistance fighter in Den Bosch, whose actions had an impact far beyond the city — he fought for all of the Netherlands. His stories live on in our family, passed down through generations. Among them are letters received at home from Prince Bernhard, acknowledging his dedication and service to our country.

From a young age, my father told me a lot of stories about his heroic actions for the country.

His courage and love for freedom are a powerful reminder of why we continue to remember — and celebrate.

A feeling of justice is literally in our DNA.

Tulum – a travel dream for many. I spent five wonderful nights here at @babel.tulum, waking up relaxed every morning in my own beautiful apartment. This stunning hotel is the perfect place to unwind, featuring a luxurious hot tub and steam room. Without a doubt, it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever stayed at. The aesthetics are absolutely amazing. Apart of that - I really loved the amazing people working there 🤍

Highly recommend this place for your next getaway!

(Swipe) 🍃 My hair was a paid actor 🍃 - Cenotes, one of the Mexican wonders in Yucatan. Visiting Cenote Atik for the second time. This Cenote is a beautiful one to visit. Which I highly recommend to you for your Tulum list. The pictures you can take here are gorgeous and you can even access the museum if you want. Keep in mind that the price has almost doubled (!) over the past two years and the cenote is partially man made. Apart of that - it definitely is worth a visit, especially if it’s your first visit to Tulum. Next to Cenote Atik, there are thousands of them to choose from, which is a must do for your Mexico travel itinerary 🇲🇽
