Indonesia travel diary (extra long) | 3 week solo trip to Bali – part 3 (Ubud)

14/07/2024 | Reageer

Hi everyone! This part of my travel diary is extra long, because it contains my entire extensive return journey, but also a lot of photos, because Ubud was the place where I planned most activities and wanted to take photos. What really appeals to me about Ubud, is also the fact that in my experience it is more the ‘authentic’ Bali, without beach and sea – but many rice fields, nature and waterfalls. I am excited to tell you about my experiences here! Will you read along?
Hi allemaal! Lezen jullie mee?

Day 13 – Uluwatu & Ubud – 22-05-2024

The morning started early with checking out of my hostel Karma Backpacker. The drive to Ubud took about 2.5 hours this time, of which I slept most of the time. Upon arrival in Ubud, I was immediately struck by the lush green surroundings. I knew right away that this was going to be my favorite part of the trip!

My new hostel in Ubud, Kuna, was absolutely amazing. Despite my early morning fatigue and the drive, I was allowed to check in early in the morning – something I had never experienced in a hostel before! I had a comfortable four-person female room with large beds that you could screen off with curtains, giving it a luxurious feel. Kuna quickly became my favorite hostel of the trip.

I was really looking forward to seeing my dear friend John from Canada on the morning of the 24th. We had met nine months ago in Bangkok, and I couldn’t wait to see him again. Before he arrived, I wanted to check off all the important activities on my list so that we could spend as much time together and catch up as possible.

My plans quickly took shape when I met Emelia from Australia and Lisa from Germany at the pool. I invited them to join me on a jeep safari to Mount Batur of the night the day after tomorrow- a spontaneous but great idea!

Close to the hostel, I discovered Blend Cafe, where I enjoyed the most beautiful (peanut butter) acai bowl I had ever seen by myself. Later in the afternoon I pampered myself with a pedicure and a Balinese massage. In the evening I enjoyed a nice dinner at Warung Be Pasih Pak Koni with my roommate Marina from Spain, Emelia and Lisa. The evening went on late because of the nice conversations we had in the hostel as well.

Mijn nieuwe hostel in Ubud, Kuna, was echt geweldig.

Day 14 – Ubud – 23-05-2024

The morning of my second week in Bali began with a solo breakfast, a moment of calm before the day’s hustle. At 8:30 AM, I embarked on a promising tour of some of Bali’s most iconic locations. The itinerary included a waterfall, a renowned temple, a coffee plantation, and rice fields. Although I hadn’t noted down all the names, I was determined to capture the experiences as vividly as possible.

Our first stop was at a remarkable waterfall. The cascading water and serene surroundings provided a perfect start to the day. Next, we visited the ‘Purification Water’ temple, a place of spiritual cleansing. While I didn’t go into the water myself, the tranquil atmosphere was impressive.

The following stop was a ‘Luwak’ coffee farm, which I found truly fascinating! Here, I learned that the coffee beans are collected from the droppings of the civet cat (luwak). This cat eats the beans, which then ferment in its stomach. The beans are subsequently cleaned, roasted, and ground to produce the exclusive and expensive Luwak coffee, known for its unique flavor. Although I didn’t try the Luwak coffee myself, I enjoyed various other coffee and tea samples. My favorite was the coconut coffee! The view of the lush green fields next to the farm was breathtaking.

The tour concluded at the D Tukad Coffee Club in Tegalalang, where we dined as a group and strolled through the rice fields. The evening sun casting its glow over the fields created a magical scene that will stay with me for a long time.

Back at the hostel, I unexpectedly discovered that a work colleague of mine was also staying there. We caught up for a bit, and it felt special to see a familiar face so far from home. We ended the evening with a movie night at the hostel, together with Marina. It was a cozy conclusion to a day full of adventure and discoveries. I decided to go to bed early, as I had a tour to Mount Batur planned with Emelia and Lisa the next morning.

Day 15 – Ubud – 24-05-2024

In a period of 30 hours, I completed a huge list of activities! Everything before John would arrive, so that I would have plenty of time to hang out with him.

At 2 am, I got up to go to Mount Batur with Emelia and Lisa. Despite the 2.5 hours of sleep, I was incredibly hyper and excited.

We booked the Bali Jeep safari tour via AirBnb – you can also book experiences and activities via airbnb. Top tip as a solo traveler! We paid around 25 euros per person excluding transport (we paid for transport from our hostel to the jeep pickup point separately, and bargained down to 450k per person). This includes the jeep to Batur, breakfast, visit to black lava, visit to the floating temple and again a luwak coffee farm. Super fun and an activity of about 7 hours or less.

The absolute highlights for me were the jeep to Batur and again the coffee farm. Seeing the sunrise over Batur was really beautiful! It was also really fun and laughing with the girls. The moments when we were standing in the jeep, driving fast on the road through beautiful landscapes of Bali after sunrise while the fresh morning breeze flew past us, I will never forget. The school children on the street, the beautiful rice fields and the sweet locals were very special to see. The further north we went and deeper into the landscape, the more I experienced the real Bali and real Indonesia. This moment with Emelia and Lisa, was one of my favorites of this trip.

We ended the tour with another visit to a luwak farm. I thought our guide, a woman whose name I don’t remember, was really hilarious! We got explanations about the various plants and their function, and will never forget the legendary words called the ‘papa strong, mama happy’ – about the ginseng plant, haha!

I liked the Bali cacao, lemongrass tea, ginger tea, ginger coffee and coconut coffee the most from the tasting – by the way, but unfortunately I didn’t take anything home with me.

After I returned, I got my nails done. One tip: always check if you have a good salon! Despite the low price, I wasn’t satisfied. I didn’t say anything, but my nails looked worse after the treatment than before.

John had already arrived at the hostel, so after my nail appointment, I quickly went back to Kuna to greet him. I had brought stroopwafels for him, and it was great to see him again after Bangkok! As mentioned earlier, I have a special bond with John. The prospect of spending our last days together in Bali was very exciting.

We immediately went to Blend café for lunch to catch up on our travel adventures. The acai bowls there are fantastic! This time, I had the Matcha bowl, which was delicious. Definitely a must-try!

In the evening, we went with John and a group from the hostel to a party at hostel Puri-garden. We enjoyed Indonesian food and watched a Balinese dance performance. Kuna organizes an activity almost every evening. Here, I also met Julia from the Netherlands, with whom I instantly clicked, and we made plans to spend more time together in the coming days. Back at the hostel, Milo from England, John, and I chatted a bit before everyone headed to their dorms.

Day 16 – Ubud – 25-05-2024

This morning, after breakfast with John, Lara and Emelia, we went for lunch not long after with a big group at Murda. Alice, John, Julia, Milo and me. Following up, we walked through the city all together, and relaxed at the pool while chatting with a lot of different people, such as Dutch Tamara, Milo, Alice, and Ren. It was a calm day where we actually didn’t do much, and just relaxed, walked and ate with the group.

In the evening, we did some games as an hostrl group activity with as host sweet Haidir – who was an employee at Kuna. Our group eventually won!

I will also never forget the memory right after I almost fell down the stairs and all the girls together upstairs in the middle of the night, including Julia, Emelia, Lara and a bunch of others, where we had a really deep girls support tea party! I love sisterhood so much!

Day 17 – Ubud – 26-05-2024

Today would be my last full day, so I really wanted to do something cool – before I (original plan) flew to the UAE to visit two of my girlfriends.

John and Julia wanted to join my plan Omma Bali – a beach club with a view of a waterfall. I thought this was a super cool beach club, and just like La Brisa and Palmilla – you can use the costs you make to eat. During my grab-bike ride there, I had no cash left, which was a bit of a problem. Because Omma is located at Tegenungan – you had to pay something like 50k just to enter the area far outside the beach club itself, luckily the Grab driver was super patient and Julia had cash for me upon arrival, so that was solved. Ren left after a short time at the beach club, so John, Julia and I ended up spending the whole day together. By the way, there was also a ‘bali-swing’ here that I could use once for free, I liked the music at the beach club, the atmosphere and the pool too! The view of the waterfall was super beautiful! It was super fun to spend hours here with Julia and John and to eat and drink deliciously.

Eventually we said goodbye to Julia, and John and I left together on the scooter to Kuna to quickly join the Indonesian food night in the hostel. The scooter ride was super fun and we chatted a lot about our Thailand trip last year. In the hostel we met up with Alice, Milo, some others and my roommate who happened to be an Emirates stewardess. She told me that the occupancy currently looked completely booked, but I had better keep my hopes up and just go.. So tomorrow evening would be exciting.

Day 18 – Ubud – 27-05-2024

My last morning in Bali had arrived. My friend Demi texted me that the occupancy of my flight to Dubai was really bad at the moment, so there was a chance that I could not stay with her in Dubai tomorrow and would have to find another route to get back to the Netherlands within 3 days.

I had the delicious pancakes for breakfast in the hostel for the last time and went with John, Milo and an English girl to the Ubud Yoga Center for Yoga. And gosh did I feel like I was bad at Yoga! I had secretly never done it before – but according to the group I did well! You could register here last minute, and I think it was about 15 euros for an hour of lessons.

After this we freshened up and changed – before we went to Leke Leka for lunch, a place that Milo had found. This beautiful location was within walking distance of Kuna and is really very beautiful! The food is very good, not expensive and the staff is incredibly sweet! I would definitely recommend a visit to this place! During this lunch, I also said goodbye to my dear friend John. I was very emotional today, because I had a beautiful journey behind me and said goodbye to all the beautiful people I had met.

Mijn laatste ochtend in Bali was aangebroken.

At the airport it was bad news as expected. After hours of waiting, I was not allowed on the flight together with a lot of Emirates crew and also accompanied on the flight to Istanbul where my family was at that time. Flying out to Bali was great, trying to fly out was disastrous.

I met the two other IPB stragglers and asked them to join me to make a plan to fly somewhere in Jakarta or Singapore. I know how and this can be, so asked which way everyone should go. Stewardess Kubra from the Turkish Emirates and stewardess Bea from the Brazilian Gol do not want me to fly in the UAE. After hours of brainstorming from our phones and with my laptop, Kubra decided to make the night flight Dubai a high priority, and Bia and I booked a full fare ticket of 250 euros to Singapore the next morning. Despite all the stress, fear and misery of not making it, I found it very nice with the ladies and a strong sense of solidarity in this problem – despite the fact that all 3 of us were completely spread out across the world.

Bia and I decided to book a hotel together in Denpasar and spend the night together. I suggested to fly with me to the UAE of Europe, so they could go to Rio from there. Because of our good connection we as two girls also shared a hotel room and immediately felt like new friends!

Day 19 – Denpassar & Singapore– 28-05-2024

In the morning, Bia and I had breakfast together at the hotel. As a cherry on top I was shocked by the fact that I received a message from someone I never expected to hear from again. I believe that Bali is a very spiritual island where you sometimes attract certain things or get them back on your path, together with Tulum! Fun fact: Bali is the only Hindu island, and people here believe in Karma. I decided to leave this message for what it is, and first make sure that I would come back to the Netherlands before I would read it myself.

On board to Singapore, I met American Tessa. Tessa would fly back late at night at the same time as Bia and I, but all 3 on a different flight. LA, Dubai and for me Abu Dhabi where my best friend Roos would pick me up for the night. Because of the long layover time we decided to spend our 8 hours in Singapore. Number 23 on my list! Normally I only cross a country off when I’ve been there for a longer period of time, but I decided to include Singapore anyway. Also because we left the airport and went to Marina Bay Sands for coffee. Here the ladies studied my message with advice, before I would read it myself. Super fun day with good conversations and a funny topic of conversation. We still have a group message of our mini layover together.

After some more browsing around on our return to the gigantic airport of Singapore, we said goodbye to each other. This was a super fun experience! In Singapore there was enough space with Etihad to Abu Dhabi, so luckily I got a seat.

Day 20 – Abu Dhabi & Amsterdam – 29-05-2024

At night I was picked up from the airport after a 6 hour flight by my best friend in the whole world – Roos. I slept through the night at Roos’s for this 12 hour layover. Luckily we were able to catch up a little bit despite the short time – the original plan was to spend a full day and night at her place. But funny enough I ended up at exactly the same location! Just like the original plan was to fly back to the Netherlands from Roos that day, only after a longer stay. If Roos and I are ‘supposed’ to meet, we somehow end up together despite all circumstances, just like during my Japan IPB problems last year! Positive coincidence!

In the morning Roos made us an extensive breakfast, I checked in at her place and got a seat. For this reason I was able to go to the airport last minute. After 6 hours – I landed back in Amsterdam, and my whole Bali adventure came to an end.

My trip to Ubud, Bali was an enriching experience, featuring delicious cuisine, breathtaking natural sights, vibrant social events, and wonderful people I met and reconnected with. The island’s unique culture and hospitality added a special touch to the spiritual activities and all the unexpected adventures along the way.

Special story 🌷🇳🇱 My great grandfather who was a fighter in the resistance (Het Verzet) 🕊️

May 4th and 5th in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, May 4th is Remembrance Day, when we pause to honor all Dutch victims of war and the freeing of the country. At 8:00 PM, we observe two minutes of silence in memory of those who lost their lives in World War II and in subsequent conflicts and peacekeeping missions. On May 5th, we celebrate Liberation Day, marking the end of the German occupation in 1945. It’s a time for gratitude, reflection, and appreciation of our freedom. To keep remembering how important this day in history is and how freedom is a human right.

For me, this time holds a deeper, personal meaning. My great-grandfather was a prominent resistance fighter in Den Bosch, whose actions had an impact far beyond the city — he fought for all of the Netherlands. His stories live on in our family, passed down through generations. Among them are letters received at home from Prince Bernhard, acknowledging his dedication and service to our country.

From a young age, my father told me a lot of stories about his heroic actions for the country.

His courage and love for freedom are a powerful reminder of why we continue to remember — and celebrate.

A feeling of justice is literally in our DNA.

Tulum – a travel dream for many. I spent five wonderful nights here at @babel.tulum, waking up relaxed every morning in my own beautiful apartment. This stunning hotel is the perfect place to unwind, featuring a luxurious hot tub and steam room. Without a doubt, it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever stayed at. The aesthetics are absolutely amazing. Apart of that - I really loved the amazing people working there 🤍

Highly recommend this place for your next getaway!

(Swipe) 🍃 My hair was a paid actor 🍃 - Cenotes, one of the Mexican wonders in Yucatan. Visiting Cenote Atik for the second time. This Cenote is a beautiful one to visit. Which I highly recommend to you for your Tulum list. The pictures you can take here are gorgeous and you can even access the museum if you want. Keep in mind that the price has almost doubled (!) over the past two years and the cenote is partially man made. Apart of that - it definitely is worth a visit, especially if it’s your first visit to Tulum. Next to Cenote Atik, there are thousands of them to choose from, which is a must do for your Mexico travel itinerary 🇲🇽

Would you like it to visit Mexico? 🍃 leave a comment!

Apart of that - it definitely is worth a visit, especially if it’s your first visit to Tulum. Next to Cenote Atik, there are thousands of them to choose from, which is a must do for your Mexico travel itinerary 🇲🇽
