Mexico travel diary | 5th (Partial) Solo trip to Tulum & Playa del Carmen

At the end of April, I traveled to Mexico for the fifth time in two years. Yes, you read that right—five times! Mexico has become my ultimate destination, the place I constantly want to return to. The combination of fantastic hospitality, the internationally beloved cuisine (also my favorite!), stunning oceans, lively parties, expats, solo travelers, and the many friends I’ve made here, makes this country incredibly special to me. In Mexico, you can find everything: from the most delicious tacos and margaritas to breathtaking views and a vibrant atmosphere that you won’t find anywhere else. Each trip to Mexico is different and brings new adventures and collaborations. That’s why I keep a diary of every trip to share all these experiences and new tips with you.

I’m also working on a very special project that will help everyone who wants to travel to Mexico… more on that soon!

Another thing I truly appreciate in Mexico is the Tulum boho clothing style. This is totally my thing, and I can fully immerse myself in it. It allows me to add my favorite stylish, classy touch to my outfits.

This trip began as a solo adventure, but I soon planned to meet up with friends who either live in Mexico or visit regularly. Many of my international friends often spend extended periods in Mexico during the fall, and I was excited to see them again.

My plan for this trip was simple: spend time with old friends, enjoy some me-time, and engage in some fantastic collaborations. I couldn’t wait to start this adventure.

I was actually supposed to return at the end of March from another trip, but that trip ended up being to Jordan due to a personal circumstance. Fortunately, I got the chance to visit Mexico again, and I couldn’t be happier.

Eind april ben ik voor de vijfde keer in twee jaar naar Mexico gereisd. Ja, je leest het goed, vijf keer! Mexico is voor mij de ultieme bestemming waar ik steeds weer naar terug wil. De combinatie van geweldige horeca, de internationaal geliefde keuken (ook mijn favoriete!), prachtige oceanen, gezellige feestjes, expats, solo-reizigers en de vele vrienden die ik hier heb gemaakt, maakt dit land bijzonder speciaal voor mij. In Mexico vind je alles: van de meest heerlijke taco’s en margarita’s tot adembenemende uitzichten en een levendige sfeer die je nergens anders vindt. Iedere reis naar Mexico is anders en biedt nieuwe avonturen en samenwerkingen. Daarom houd ik van elke reis een dagboek bij om al deze ervaringen en nieuwe tips met jullie te delen.

Wat ik ook enorm waardeer in Mexico, is de Tulum boho kledingstijl. Dit is helemaal mijn ding en ik kan me hier volledig in uitleven. Het geeft me de kans om mijn favoriete stijlvolle, classy touch toe te voegen aan mijn outfits.

Deze reis begon als een solo-avontuur, maar ik zou al snel vrienden opzoeken die óf in Mexico wonen óf hier regelmatig terugkomen. Veel van mijn internationale vrienden zijn in het najaar vaak voor langere tijd in Mexico, en ik keek ernaar uit om hen weer te zien.

Mijn plan voor deze reis was eenvoudig: tijd doorbrengen met oude vrienden, genieten van wat me-time en meedoen aan een aantal fantastische samenwerkingen. Ik kon niet wachten om aan dit avontuur te beginnen.

Eigenlijk zou ik al eind maart zijn teruggekeerd van een andere reis, maar dit werd uiteindelijk Jordanië vanwege een persoonlijke omstandigheid. Gelukkig kreeg ik de kans om Mexico opnieuw te bezoeken, en ik kon niet blijer zijn.

Day 1 – Amsterdam-Cancun-Playa del Carmen – 20-04-2024

My journey began from Amsterdam with Tui. Tui often has great deals on flights, and I managed to book a ‘deluxe’ seat for just €250, including hand luggage (not a collaboration). This was slightly more expensive than flying ‘ipb’ but guaranteed my spot on the flight. Interestingly, for the first time ever, I was asked for an onward ticket to Mexico at Schiphol! I quickly booked a standby return flight from Mexico to Madrid.

Onboard, I immediately recognized a familiar face—the stewardess and I had been following each other on Instagram for ages. We spent a few hours of the flight having great conversations. After the 8-hour journey, I took the ADO bus from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen as usual for 250 pesos (about €12.50). The ride takes between 45 and 75 minutes, depending on the stops.

After a 40-minute walk with all my luggage to the end of 5th Avenue, I checked in, changed clothes, and went out for dinner that evening with my Dutch-English friend Warren, who was also on a solo trip without his girlfriend.

Mijn reis begon vanaf Amsterdam met Tui. Tui heeft vaak geweldige aanbiedingen op vliegtickets, en zo kon ik een ‘deluxe’ stoel boeken voor slechts €250, inclusief handbagage (geen samenwerking). Dit was net iets duurder dan ‘ipb’ vliegen, maar het gaf me wel de zekerheid dat ik mee kon. Voor het eerst werd ik op Schiphol gevraagd om een uitreisticket voor Mexico te laten zien! Dit had ik nog nooit meegemaakt, dus boekte ik ter plekke een standby terugvlucht van Mexico naar Madrid.

Aan boord herkende ik meteen een bekende – de stewardess en ik volgden elkaar al heel lang op Instagram. We hadden dan ook een paar uur lang gezellige gesprekken tijdens de vlucht. Na de 8 uur durende vlucht nam ik zoals altijd de ADO bus van Cancun Airport naar Playa del Carmen voor 250 pesos (ongeveer €12,50). De rit duurt tussen de 45 en 75 minuten, afhankelijk van de stops.

Na een wandeling van 40 minuten met al mijn bagage naar het einde van de 5th Avenue, checkte ik in, kleedde me om en ging die avond uit eten met mijn Nederlands-Engelse reis vriend Warren, die ook op solo reis was zonder zijn vriendin.

Day 2 – Playa del Carmen – 21-04-2024

Today, I was going to spend most of the day alone, and I was perfectly fine with that. I enjoy my own company and had some exciting plans for this trip. In the evening, I was set to have dinner with my Mexican friend Sahiry, and around midday, I would meet up with Warren again. Most of my Playa del Carmen friends had already returned to Canada, the US, or their other countries, but there were still a few friends in Mexico I wanted to see.

Having a small apartment to myself was amazing. It gave me the peace and freedom to move at my own pace without having to consider anyone else. This apartment was even cheaper than an average hostel this season, and since I already knew people at my destination, I preferred it over a hostel.

I started the day with a leisurely breakfast at Choux Choux, my favorite breakfast spot in Playa del Carmen. It’s so popular that there’s often a line, but it’s never too long. I enjoyed delicious eggs benedict, a cappuccino, and a fantastic coffee smoothie—highly recommended! After breakfast, I spent the afternoon relaxing on the beach at Playa-72, a beautiful spot mostly frequented by locals. And had a bite inbetween with Warren at Las Hijas de la Tostadas.

One major advantage of Playa del Carmen over Tulum is that the beaches are free to visit, it’s cheaper, there are more expats, and everything is closer together. You can reach anywhere within 30 minutes by walking along 5th Avenue. While I personally prefer the vibe and aesthetics of Tulum, Playa is less ideal for those perfect Instagram photos.

In the evening, I went out for dinner with Sahiry at Mariskinky, around Calle 38. I really like this area for staying and exploring other parts of Playa. We caught up extensively over nice food and a tasty ‘Carajillo’—the Mexican version of an Espresso Martini, made with Licor 43 instead of Martini. Later, Warren joined us at another spot.

Vandaag zou ik het grootste deel van de dag alleen zijn, en dat vond ik helemaal prima. Ik vermaak me prima in mijn eentje en had leuke vooruitzichten voor deze reis. Vanavond zou ik dineren met mijn Mexicaanse vriendin Sahiry en rond de middag weer afspreken met Warren. De meeste van mijn vrienden uit Playa del Carmen waren al terug naar Canada, de VS, of hun andere landen, maar er waren nog enkele vrienden in Mexico die ik graag wilde zien.

Het was heerlijk om een klein appartementje voor mezelf te hebben. Het gaf me de rust en vrijheid om mijn eigen tempo te bepalen, zonder rekening te hoeven houden met anderen. Dit appartement was zelfs goedkoper dan een gemiddeld hostel in dit seizoen, en omdat ik al mensen ken op bestemming, geef ik de voorkeur aan een eigen plek boven een hostel.

Ik begon de dag met een lekker lang ontbijt bij Choux Choux, mijn favoriete ontbijtplek in Playa del Carmen. Het is zo populair dat er vaak een rij staat, maar die is nooit abnormaal lang. Ik genoot van heerlijke eggs benedict, een cappuccino en een fantastische coffee-smoothie – echt een aanrader! Daarna bracht ik de middag door op het strand bij Playa-72, een mooi strand waar vooral locals komen. Tussendoor at ik nog een klein hapje bij Las Hijas de la Tostadas met Warren.

Een groot voordeel van Playa del Carmen ten opzichte van Tulum is dat de stranden gratis te bezoeken zijn, het goedkoper is, er meer expats zijn en alles dichter bij elkaar ligt. Binnen 30 minuten wandelen over de 5th Avenue ben je overal. Hoewel ik meer houd van de vibe en aesthetics van Tulum, is Playa minder geschikt voor fotogenieke Instagramfoto’s.

In de avond ging ik uit eten met Sahiry bij Mariskinky, rond Calle 38. Ik vind deze omgeving erg prettig om te verblijven en van daaruit andere plekken in Playa te verkennen. Onder het genot van heerlijk eten en een lekkere ‘Carajillo’ – de Mexicaanse versie van de Espresso Martini met Licor 43 in plaats van Martini – kletsten we uitgebreid bij over onze vorige ontmoeting in januari/februari. Later op de avond, sloot Warren zich bij ons aan op een andere plek.

Day 3 – Playa del Carmen & Tulum – 22-04-2024

The day began early and solo, with breakfast at La Jungla de La Riviera, a charming little spot near my Airbnb. I enjoyed some delicious overnight oats before taking a taxi to the ADO station to catch the bus to Tulum.

Pro tip: Buy your ADO bus tickets online via their website with PayPal or credit card. This saves you from the long lines at bus stations, where you often have to pay with cash.

After about an hour’s ride, I arrived at the ADO bus station in Tulum. I walked with my luggage for only about fifteen minutes to Acacia Tulum. Taxis here charge exorbitant prices, so walking is a good option. Fortunately, I could check in immediately upon arrival.

This absolutely stunning location in the photos below is my Airbnb, Acacia Tulum (IG @acacia_tulum). I partnered with this beautiful place during my stay in Tulum, and creating content here is fantastic. From the moment I arrived, I felt instantly relaxed. The grounds exude peace and are beautifully designed.

This entire house is mine alone during this visit to Tulum. Staying here either as a couple of solo traveller is an ultimate getaway to relax and also to be able to explore beautiful Tulum, as the location is not very far from the ADO station or downtown Tulum. The front yard has a small pool, and the bathroom is gorgeous with a giant mirror. The large double bed is wonderfully comfortable.

I love the tranquility here; it feels like I own my own house in Tulum, a place where I can completely unwind and retreat. This place feels incredibly peaceful and safe. It’s wonderful to be able to stay here for five nights. The honey-scented shower products are delightful, and I enjoy the coffee bar in my room with good coffee pods and a fridge. The air conditioning and fan keep the room at a pleasant temperature, and there are plenty of towels and even an extra blanket. On the nightstand, there’s a booklet with recommendations for enthusiasts.

The property is well-secured and offers various activities, such as a refreshing ice bath. There are cozy seating areas, water points to refill your bottle, a pool that feels like a magical cenote, and a charming eatery called Roots ’n Beets around the corner, where you can also do sports activities. Bike rentals are also available here, making exploring Tulum a breeze!

Acacia Tulum is truly a paradise. The serene atmosphere and luxurious amenities make this stay unforgettable.

De dag begon vroeg en solo, met een ontbijt bij La Jungla de La Riviera, een schattig plekje vlakbij mijn Airbnb. Hier genoot ik van heerlijke overnight oats voordat ik een taxi nam naar het ADO station, om de bus naar Tulum te pakken.

Pro-tip: Koop je ADO buskaartjes online via hun website met PayPal of creditcard. Dit bespaart je de lange rijen bij de busstations, waar vaak alleen contant wordt betaald.

Na een rit van ongeveer een uur kwam ik aan in Tulum. Met mijn bagage liep ik in een kwartier naar Acacia Tulum. De taxi’s hier vragen absurde prijzen, dus wandelen is een goede optie. Bij aankomst kon ik gelukkig meteen inchecken.

Deze absoluut schitterende locatie op de onderstaande foto’s is mijn Airbnb, Acacia Tulum (IG @acacia_tulum). Tijdens mijn verblijf hier heb ik een samenwerking met deze prachtige plek, en het maken van content is echt fantastisch. Vanaf het moment van aankomst voelde ik me direct ontspannen. Het terrein straalt rust uit en is prachtig ontworpen.

Dit hele huisje is van mij alleen tijdens dit bezoek aan Tulum. De voortuin heeft een klein zwembad, en de badkamer is prachtig met een gigantische spiegel. Het grote tweepersoonsbed is heerlijk comfortabel.

Ik hou van de rust hier; het voelt alsof ik mijn eigen huis in Tulum bezit, een plek waar ik volledig tot rust kan komen en me kan terugtrekken. Deze plek voelt ontzettend vredig en veilig. Als stel of alleenreizende (zoals ik) is dit de ultieme plek om te ontspannen en tegelijkertijd het prachtige Tulum te verkennen. De locatie ligt namelijk niet ver van het ADO-station of het centrum van Tulum. Het is geweldig om hier vijf nachten te kunnen verblijven. De doucheproducten met honinggeur zijn heerlijk, en ik geniet van het koffiebarretje in mijn kamer met goede koffiecups en een koelkast. De airconditioning en ventilator zorgen voor een aangename temperatuur, en er zijn voldoende handdoeken en zelfs een extra deken. Op het nachtkastje ligt een boekje met aanbevelingen voor de liefhebber.

Het terrein is goed beveiligd en biedt diverse activiteiten, zoals een verfrissend ice bath. Er zijn gezellige zitplekken, waterpunten om je fles bij te vullen, een zwembad dat aan een magische cenote doet denken, en een charmante horecagelegenheid genaamd Roots ’n Beets om de hoek, waar je ook sportactiviteiten kunt doen. Fietsverhuur is hier ook mogelijk, waardoor het verkennen van Tulum een fluitje van een cent is!

Acacia Tulum is werkelijk een paradijs. De serene sfeer en luxe voorzieningen maken dit verblijf onvergetelijk.

In the early afternoon, one of my best friends who also lives here, Cyni, picked me up. We keep in touch via FaceTime as much as possible, and I visit my international friends whenever I can. I’ve seen Cyni not only in Mexico but also in Tokyo last year. This marks the sixth time we’ve met in the two years we’ve known each other (feels like ten years), and these are always extended visits of days or weeks. Friendship is incredibly valuable to me, and I always strive to stay loyal and consistent with the people I love. Distance is an illusion; I don’t need to be around someone daily to keep loving them. Those who are in each other’s thoughts are always connected.

Cyni recently got a scooter, making it much easier for us to get around. Usually, I cycle a lot in Tulum, which is my secret to staying slim despite enjoying the delicious Mexican cuisine. This trip, however, it was quicker and more comfortable to reach our destinations by scooter, given the distances involved. I’m really against taking taxis here.

We spent a lot of time at her apartment, where I sometimes joined her for meals. We also spent an extended time at the beach in the hotel zone. If you walk to the beach at Raw Love / Ahau Tulum and settle in around the corner, you don’t have to pay a minimum spend like in most places in the hotel zone.

I want to highlight that many things I do in Tulum are not expensive and are budget-friendly. Tulum can be very pricey, but having visited often and knowing many locals and expats, I’ve learned the hacks to save money. Most beaches in Tulum, including those near the ruins, charge a small fee depending on the location and purpose. Unfortunately, it’s currently seaweed season, so keep that in mind when planning a trip to the Riviera Maya.

In the evening, I had a small bite with Warren at La Hoya Verde, next to Bonita in down town. We enjoyed some amazing guacamole and another coffee smoothie.

Tulum always offers an adventure filled with friendship and discovery.

Aan het begin van de middag werd ik opgehaald door een van mijn beste vriendinnen, Cyni, die hier ook woont. We hebben regelmatig FaceTime contact en ik zoek mijn internationale vrienden zo veel mogelijk op. Ik heb Cyni niet alleen in Mexico gezien, maar ook in Tokyo vorig jaar. Dit is de zesde keer dat we elkaar zien in de twee jaar dat we elkaar kennen (het voelt al als tien jaar), en het zijn altijd meerdere dagen of weken samen. Vriendschap is voor mij ontzettend waardevol. Ik doe er alles aan om loyaal en consistent te blijven naar de mensen die ik liefheb. Voor mij is afstand een illusie; ik hoef niet dagelijks bij iemand te zijn om van ze te blijven houden. Wie in elkaars gedachten zijn, blijven altijd verbonden.

Cyni heeft sinds kort een scooter, waardoor we veel makkelijker van alles kunnen ondernemen. Normaal fiets ik veel in Tulum, wat mijn geheim is om slank te blijven ondanks de heerlijke Mexicaanse keuken. Maar deze reis was het sneller en comfortabeler om met de scooter op onze bestemmingen aan te komen, gezien alles nog best ver uit elkaar ligt. Taxi’s vermijd ik liever.

We brachten veel tijd door in haar appartement, waar ik soms ook mee at, en gingen ook voor langere tijd naar het strand in de hotelzone. Bij Raw Love / Ahau Tulum kun je zonder minimum spend naar het strand, wat een fijne budgetvriendelijke optie is.

Ik wil jullie laten weten dat veel van wat ik doe in Tulum niet duur is. Omdat ik Tulum erg prijzig vind en hier vaak ben geweest, ken ik veel locals en expats, waardoor ik de ‘hacks’ ken om kosten te besparen. Bijna alle stranden in Tulum vragen een kleine vergoeding, afhankelijk van de locatie en je doel. Houd er rekening mee dat het momenteel het zeewierseizoen is, wat invloed kan hebben op je Riviera Maya trip.

’s Avonds ging ik met Warren een hapje eten bij La Hoya Verde, naast Bonita in down town. We genoten van heerlijke guacamole en een koffie smoothie.

Tulum blijft elke keer weer een avontuur vol vriendschap en ontdekking.

Day 4 – Tulum – 23-04-2024

It was a beautiful morning, and for the first time, I woke up in my own lovely place. I felt wonderfully rested and grateful to start each morning in this charming little house.

Today, something special was on the agenda: a photoshoot with John, an American photographer I met in January when I wanted to rent a bike from him. First, I would pick up Warren at Meteora, a place that brings back warm memories from my previous stay. Then, I would collect my bike from Tulum Bike Rental, John’s shop, which is close to Meteora.

Warren and I started the day with breakfast at Raw Love in downtown. This spot is a favorite of mine due to the delicious acai bowls, coffees, and smoothies. Plus, it looks absolutely beautiful. This time, I chose the Cacao Bowl with peanut butter—highly recommended! I’ve noticed that I’m developing a particular fondness for peanut butter in smoothies and smoothie bowls, haha.

After breakfast, I took my bike to my hostel and was picked up by John for the shoot. We had drinks at Matcha Mama in the hotel zone, where we also took photos, and we continued taking pictures at some cute signs and the entrance of a beautiful beach club. Back at my place, I changed and headed to Cyni’s apartment. Together, we set off on her scooter to Pancho Villa, where I was really looking forward to their delicious nachos. Moreover, a friend’s boyfriend works there. Keep in mind that you now have to pay 60 pesos to enter this area.

After spending some time on the beach, we went back to Cyni’s apartment and spent some time with her and her boyfriend Leon. Then, I went for a quick swim at Warren’s place in Meteora before we headed downtown for dinner together.

It was a day filled with beautiful moments, wonderful people, and delightful places that I won’t soon forget.

Het was een stralende ochtend en voor het eerst werd ik wakker in mijn eigen prachtige plekje. Ik voelde me heerlijk uitgerust en dankbaar dat ik iedere ochtend in dit mooie huisje mag beginnen.

Vandaag stond er iets speciaals op de planning: een fotoshoot met John, een Amerikaanse fotograaf die ik in januari ontmoette toen ik een fiets bij hem wilde huren. Eerst zou ik Warren oppikken bij Meteora, een plek die warme herinneringen oproept van mijn vorige verblijf. Vervolgens zou ik mijn fiets ophalen bij Tulum Bike Rental, de winkel van John die vlak bij Meteora ligt.

Warren en ik begonnen de dag met een ontbijt bij Raw Love in downtown. Deze plek is een favoriet van mij vanwege de heerlijke acai bowls, koffies en smoothies. Het ziet er bovendien prachtig uit. Deze keer koos ik voor de Cacao Bowl met pindakaas, een aanrader! Ik merk dat ik steeds meer een zwak krijg voor pindakaas in smoothies en smoothie bowls, haha.

Na het ontbijt bracht ik mijn fiets naar mijn hostel en werd ik opgepikt door John voor de shoot. We dronken een drankje bij Matcha Mama in de hotelzone, waar we ook de foto’s maakten, en namen die verder ook bij enkele leuke borden en de ingang van een mooie beachclub. De resultaten van deze en de volgende shoot zijn te vinden onder het kopje Mexico hier op mijn blog.

Terug in mijn huisje, kleedde ik me om en ging ik naar Cyni’s appartement. Samen vertrokken we per scooter naar Pancho Villa, waar ik enorm veel zin had in hun heerlijke nacho’s. Bovendien werkt daar de vriend van een vriendin van mij. Houd er wel rekening mee dat je tegenwoordig 60 pesos moet betalen om dit gebied te betreden.

Na wat tijd op het strand te hebben doorgebracht, gingen we terug naar Cyni’s appartement en brachten we nog wat tijd door met haar en Leon, haar vriend. Vervolgens ging ik nog even zwemmen bij Warren in Meteora voordat we samen gingen eten in downtown.

Het was een dag vol mooie momenten, fijne mensen en heerlijke plekjes, die ik niet snel zal vergeten.
