Mexico travel diary (Extra long) | Friend reunion in Tulum & Playa del Carmen – part 1

27/02/2024 | Reageer

Hi everyone! Welcome back to another travel diary. I’ve been catching up a lot with my blogging because I didn’t want to be too far behind with my travels and uploads. In this travel post, I am going to share all my experiences from last trip. I would like to say that this trip was the best of all 4 trips to Mexico. That’s why I can’t wait to share my tips and experiences with you. Mexico has become my favorite travel destination after visiting 20 countries. What used to be Japan is now Mexico – and years ago I really didn’t expect that I could love a country almost more than Japan. Mexico is an amazing country for solo travel, delicious food, beautiful nature, meeting international people, working remote and a rich culture. No day of my trip is the same! When I first came to Mexico in May 2022 without expectations, I did not expect that I would be there at least 4 times in just over 1.5 years! Are you reading this story along? First of all, I would like to say that due to personal reasons, I have kept certain things personal and have not written them in my travel diary. Some memories are only for the heart, too personal or too emotional to share online with the world  ♥
Hi allemaal!

Day 1 – Amsterdam & Playa del Carmen – 25-01-2024

The day started with an early seat at the gate, because I used crew tickets (‘IPB’/Stand-by) and there were many seats available. Chantal – my good friend who flies for KLM – did not fly herself this trip, but would be joining me on this flight while travelling with a friend. Just like during my first trip, we were going to Mexico together again today. We would not go on holiday together again though, but we planned on meeting up at a point during our stay in Playa del Carmen. To tell you a short story – Chantal worked at my airline for a while during the covid period – that way, we became friends. She often told me about Mexico and her life there, which made me more curious about the country. Her stories, in combination with the many countries in lockdown during covid-19- made me travel to this beautiful country in 2022. If I had not been on that first trip, my life would be completely different now! I owe a large part of my beloved international group of friends to my first trip to Mexico, subsequent trips to friends I know through my travels, and my visits to other countries in South America.

After a flight of about 10.5 hours, we landed in Cancun. I continued my journey on my own, and booked an ADO bus ticket at the airport to Playa del Carmen. The ticket costs about 250 pesos / 12.50 euros, and the ride takes about an hour. I think the ADO bus is a nice, cheaper, comfortable and safe travel method within Mexico that I definitely recommend during a stay. In Playa, some of my best friends; Ruben from America, Cyni from Australia and Leon from Mexico, would pick me up by car. Cyni, Ruben and I have been close friends since the first trip, and talk to each other or facetime almost every day. Leon and Cyni are a couple who live together in Mexico and who I visit often. I even saw them in Japan last year! Ruben and I are close friends, and would stay in an Airbnb apartment together around Calle 40, close to Cyni and Leon’s apartment. The four of us went out to eat at a taco place, where a whole group of Cyni and Leon’s friends joined. It was fun! But our evening did not end late due to my jet lag and short night prior to my flight.

Day 2 – Playa del Carmen – 26-01-2024

The morning started at Choux Choux – a breakfast spot I highly recommend! It was about a 15 minute walk from our Airbnb. I have to say that as I am typing this, I really miss the evenings with hilarious conversations together with Ruben in our shared Airbnb. Ruben and I booked PDC mainly to hang out with Cyni and Leon, but had unexpectedly been moving to their new place in Tulum since yesterday – so some plans changed all of the sudden right before we would come to Mexico. Ruben and I believed that everything happens for a reason – so we were very curious about what would come our way. We suddenly ended up with an ocean of time, since we both did not have that many plans and wishes for Playa without Cyni and Leon all of the sudden – apart of meeting some of my other international friends which was already a solid plan for me for this trip.

After the delicious breakfast and a nice long visit to the beach, we would have a drink at La Organica with my Canadian friend Rita – whom I met in Colombia in 2022.  This would be the second time we would meet in Mexico, so our 3th time meeting in total. I am extremely thankful for the friends I have made while traveling, so I can also tell you that Rita is a beautiful soul for whom I am also very grateful. Ruben also felt a good connection with her when I introduced them to each other, so the three of us had a great time for sure.

During the evening, I introduced Ruben to a friend of mine from Canada – Nadeem, whom I happen to know from the same trip as Rita and who I also happen to see more often in Mexico. He took us to Las Hijas de la tostada – a super tasty and well-priced restaurant on 5th avenue. I definitely recommend the dishes you can see in my photo. It was lovely catching up with him and intruducing Ruben and him to each other as well. Nadeem invited us to his brother’s apartment during dinner – to have a drink there after we would finish eating – and then go out with him and his friends together with a group of expats. I was still a bit tired due to my jet lag, so I decided to quickly order a coffee and definitely accept this invitation. We were defenitely open to meet new people and to experience new unexpected things! And in retrospect, how grateful I am now even more for this invitation! The friends he introduced Ruben and me to, are now new friends and special people that I am very grateful for. We were for sure planning to see them more often during this trip (and afterwards), but you will read that for yourself later in my stories eventually! The evening at Sahiry and Omar’s apartment was very nice, and it was amazing to meet their other friends there as well. We continued our evening with the group at Be Playa – a rooftop bar, had a drink there and eventually left earlier again to sleep.

(On the picture – fully left Andruko, next to me Daniel, Sahiry in front of me and Omar on the right.)

Day 3 – Playa del Carmen – 27-01-2024

Today, another great day started with breakfast with Ruben at Choux Choux – which has truly become my favorite breakfast spot in Playa this trip. The coffee here is delicious, the juices too and the Egg Benedict was my favorite. If you order a breakfast set with a smoothie bowl, I recommend that you share it with someone – it is a lot. The group had invited us to the beach near The Reef Coco beach (beautiful, free to access beach behind the resort). Ultimately, we would be a group of about 20 people. We certainly spent a few hours here and it was great fun.

After lots of laughter with the group on the beach, many nice conversations with Daniel in the ocean and cuddles with Jenna’s dachshund named Georgia (p.s., with a dachshund here in Mexico I felt completely at home, given my two dachshund kids in Netherlands didn’t come with me). Ruben and I decided to go back to our Airbnb and change clothes for the evening – we were invited again, to go out for dinner with the whole group around 8 o’clock.

Ruben and spended a tiny bit of time at the Thompson’s rooftop terrace, and then left to La Vicenta – which was just a very short walking distance away from where we were at that moment. At La Vincenta, we would all come together for dinner. It was a very nice experience with the gigantic group! I shared a super tasty cervice and grilled salmon here with Daniel, who was sitting next to me, and who I mainly hung out with since yesterday. I have to say that if you prefer some more quiet and chill places to eat, this restaurant is not really the best for that – as it is very loud in terms of music and activities happening inside, and it’s hard to hear each other. It was great to be invited and to come all together though, I loved this evening and the food! The other funny downside is that I got my instant karma – which was getting forced to take a shot of Mezcal – when I told the singer at the restaurant that it was the birthday of one of the guys (as a prank) of our group, haha! I am very grateful that Nadeem introduced me to this fantastic group of people. We ended the evening with the group at Santino – with a floor of reggaeton music and a floor of techno music (and those are both my favorite music genres, haha). We didn’t stay until late though – as before it turned midnight, Ruben and I took a taxi back to our airbnb to go to sleep.

Day 4 – Playa del Carmen& Tulum – 28-01-2024

Today, Ruben and I would leave for Tulum. Although we had had a very nice number of days here – much more fun than we had already expected – we were really looking forward to being back in Tulum. Tulum is the place where we met our group of friends in 2022 and has become somewhat of our ‘home base’ abroad. It’s the place where I have built up such a network of connections, collabs and friends that it now feels like a second home. Chantal and her friend had time today to have breakfast with us and to get to know Ruben. Chantal suggested Chez Celine on 5th avenue – and we decided to meet up there. Please note that if you want to eat at this nice place, there may be a long queue. Around 12 o’clock, we left for the ADO station to go to Tulum – I recommend that you book a ticket online on the official website, because this can be paid digitally, saves a lot of time in the queue and you can directly show the QR code to the busdriver. This ride took about an hour, and we couldn’t wait to get back to our favorite town. The entire bus trip, we were still reminiscing about our new memories of PDC, our new friends and new things to look forward to. I am very grateful for everything that Mexico always brings me and the fact that I am able to travel back often, thanks to my crew tickets and collaborations! No day here is ever the same.

Ruben took a taxi from the ADO station to Selina downtown where he was staying at. I walked (as the taxis in Tulum are a big rip-off for tourists)  with all of my luggage to Meteora Stay & Coffee house. My place was about a fifteen minute walk from the bus station. I partly collaborated with Meteora in May last year – andthis time I would stay for almost a whole week as a full collaboration in a private queen size room. After checking in, we went to Cyni and Leon’s apartment in Aldea Zama. Ruben and I had rented a bicycle – like every day in Tulum because taxis are not affordable here – so we cycled in the unexpected pouring jungle rain towards our friends’ apartment. This afternoon was very quiet and rainy, so we watched Project X from the couch with them. At the beginning of the evening, Ruben and I went back to change. The reason we left Cyni’s place after quite a short time, is because we had a cocktail and food collab with Casa Palmeta at 8am. This new hotspot in downtown Tulum is a place for good cocktails and bites. The staff is super nice, the cocktails and snacks are delicious and the chocolate dessert is incredibly tasty! I don’t think I’ve ever eaten a better chocolate mousse than the one here! The dishes and cocktails I had included the ‘Faint Glimmers’ and the ‘Franz Darling’ cocktail. We really recommend this place!

Day 5 – Tulum – 29-01-2024

This amazing location in downtown Tulum was lovely to stay.  It’s a hostel/airbnb with the option of private rooms such as the queen-size room (where I have stayed on my own during my stays), king-size rooms or shared dorms. This absolutely stunning oasis in Tulum Pueblo is in my genuine opinion absolutely worth staying at. Although it is not a too large hostel in terms of size, it gives me the feeling of a boutique hotel/airbnb & is still a very social place to meet other (solo) travellers. The atmosphere is safe, social, zen & calm. The facilities, such as the great pool, beautiful rooms, bike rental, overall interior design, tv room, co working area’s, wifi, unlimited coffee, entrance area, reception and even the honey scented soap & showergels are great. The location in downtown is not too far from the ADO station & main road + a walking distance from restaurants. The staff is super kind and helpful.

Ruben and I wanted to visit Mayan Monkey this day – to relive old memories. At this place, we had breakfast – in my case delicious Chilaquiles. Mexican food has become my favorite food in the world because of all of my visits! In the past at this nice hostel, we met our group of friends, made great memories and it all really ‘started’ – so I definitely recommend staying at Mayan Monkey (which is not a collab) as well. This day would be a bit quieter – we would meet up with Cyni again at her apartment and would have lunch with her at Aldea Zama, before I would go to Casa Venus on my own for a collaboration. Casa Venus is a beauty salon in Aldea Zama. Various services are offered here, such as hair styling, beauty treatments, manicures and pedicures. Today, I would receive a beautiful goddess blowout with a curl as a collab, and a Kerastase treatment. My hair was professionally and thoroughly cared for by the employees in the salon, before the hairstyling itself. I was very happy with this collaboration, because my hair always suffers a lot in Mexico due to the heat, the water in the shower, not being able to take my hair styling tools with me because it does not work well with a power plug, and the sea water. After this treatment, I felt even better and more cared for. I received many compliments about my hairstyle after this treatment, and it also lasted a few days in the heat. I definitely recommend this salon to you!

This afternoon, I booked my return ticket. My intuition told me to stay an extra day and immediately check with Tui for tickets at that very same moment. I followed my gut feeling and checked for it – which turned out to be right! The result: I was able to stay for an extra day, because flying with Tui directly to Amsterdam was much cheaper than via another country while using crew tickets – for which there were also very few options on the day I wanted to fly home. Plus, my newly booked ticket guaranteed me that I could fly home confirmed without stress, instead of only being told at the gate. I spent only 245 euros with my hold luggage – so I recommend booking last minute tickets from Tui directly on the website, a few days before your desired departure date. We also planned to go out with Nadeem and Daniel’s group during the last few days of being here, so I was happy being able to extend my time here.

Hier gingen we ontbijten – in mijn geval lekkere Chilaquiles.

  Day 6 – Tulum – 30-01-2024

This morning, Ruben wanted to rest for a long time and me myself wanted to go to a Cenote early in the morning. Yesterday, I had a super nice chat with my hostelfriend Lisa from Germany. We had a lot of nice conversations and a good connection, so we decided to go to a Cenote together. Every Mexico trip, I want to visit at least 2 new Cenotes. I think doing this is one of the highlights of my travels. For those who have not been to Mexico before – a cenote is a natural water source – often in the jungle – underground or in open air. In my opinion it is magical, paradisiacal and otherworldly, like being on another planet. Yukatan is also known for these magical wonders. There are at least 2000 cenotes around this area! I have visited around 9 different ones during all my Mexico trips combined.

We both rented a bike and headed to Cenote Calavera – about fifteen minutes by bike from our hostel. In the meantime, we got some drinks and snacks at the 7eleven near the main road – my karma drink from there was really delicious! It was great spending time with Lisa today, having good conversations and having a nice swim in the underground cenote water.

Once back at the hostel, I changed clothes and met Ruben at Selina Los Lirios aka Mia Beach Club. This is my favorite beach club in Tulum. I stayed here for some days in the past, went to the beach here often, partied several times with friends and often had breakfast, coffee or lunch at this beautiful place. I think this is a great place for all these topics! I also cycle these long distances of around 6 kilometers without thinking about it, even in the dark! Makes me feel very Dutch, stay on budget and in shape with the delicious food and drinks here in Mexico, haha. I had the beet salad here – just like last year – which is very tasty. By the way – if you stay at Selina both downtown or here, you get a discount on food and drinks! And that is a bonus, considering that much in the hotel area is often very pricey. Once back in downtown, I drank a nice iced coffee by myself at Liefs – close to Ruben’s Selina and Mayan Monkey. This nice place is run by Dutch people and I am happy to support it. The iced coffee here is the best in town and the owners are super sweet – Later that evening, Ruben and I had dinner at my favorite burrito place – Burrito Amor. I’ve been to this place many times and the burritos are a 10/10 – be sure to try the shrimp burrito with extra avocado. I ALWAYS order this here. I must say that in terms of food, I was most looking forward to eating here again during my stay.

Covid-19 has made me realize how quickly our freedom can be taken away from us, so after all the restrictions in 2022, I started traveling as much as possible and saving as much money as I could to be able to do so. You are the only person in the world who is in charge to make your own dreams come true. Don’t let the fact that you’re single or friends don’t want to come, stop you – go on that trip! (If you are in a (financial) position to do this of course). My life has changed since I went on my first solo trip in 2017. I also found it scary at first, but taking risks and going out of your comfort zone is where you find change, magic and new, unexpected things! It’s really not as lonely, scary or boring as you might think about solo travel, it’s honestly the best gift I’ve ever given myself! It is what you make of it!

The first half of my 4th trip to Mexico was fantastic. I met super nice friends of friends and thanks to them I did and experienced super fun unexpected things. What I think makes traveling so much fun is the people you get to know and will take you along, so I can’t wait to tell you about the rest of the trip in my next diary! I am extremely grateful for the dear friends I have made through all my travels.

Thank you for reading my travel diary part 1. In part 2 you will find my tips from the last trip are discussed. I plan to make an e-book with all my Mexico tips and tricks in the future when I have more space to start making and setting up things!

Collaboration note – Casa Palmera, Meteora and Casa Venus are collaborations.

Special story 🌷🇳🇱 My great grandfather who was a fighter in the resistance (Het Verzet) 🕊️

May 4th and 5th in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, May 4th is Remembrance Day, when we pause to honor all Dutch victims of war and the freeing of the country. At 8:00 PM, we observe two minutes of silence in memory of those who lost their lives in World War II and in subsequent conflicts and peacekeeping missions. On May 5th, we celebrate Liberation Day, marking the end of the German occupation in 1945. It’s a time for gratitude, reflection, and appreciation of our freedom. To keep remembering how important this day in history is and how freedom is a human right.

For me, this time holds a deeper, personal meaning. My great-grandfather was a prominent resistance fighter in Den Bosch, whose actions had an impact far beyond the city — he fought for all of the Netherlands. His stories live on in our family, passed down through generations. Among them are letters received at home from Prince Bernhard, acknowledging his dedication and service to our country.

From a young age, my father told me a lot of stories about his heroic actions for the country.

His courage and love for freedom are a powerful reminder of why we continue to remember — and celebrate.

A feeling of justice is literally in our DNA.

Tulum – a travel dream for many. I spent five wonderful nights here at @babel.tulum, waking up relaxed every morning in my own beautiful apartment. This stunning hotel is the perfect place to unwind, featuring a luxurious hot tub and steam room. Without a doubt, it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever stayed at. The aesthetics are absolutely amazing. Apart of that - I really loved the amazing people working there 🤍

Highly recommend this place for your next getaway!

Apart of that - I really loved the amazing people working there 🤍 Highly recommend this place for your next getaway! Do you dream of going to Tulum or to stay here? (Swipe) 🍃 My hair was a paid actor 🍃 - Cenotes, one of the Mexican wonders in Yucatan. Visiting Cenote Atik for the second time. This Cenote is a beautiful one to visit. Which I highly recommend to you for your Tulum list. The pictures you can take here are gorgeous and you can even access the museum if you want. Keep in mind that the price has almost doubled (!) over the past two years and the cenote is partially man made. Apart of that - it definitely is worth a visit, especially if it’s your first visit to Tulum. Next to Cenote Atik, there are thousands of them to choose from, which is a must do for your Mexico travel itinerary 🇲🇽
