Spain Travel Diary | Solo trip to Madrid & Valencia friend visit

07/02/2026 | Reageer

Hi everyone, welcome to a new mini travel diary! This trip was my first time visiting Madrid and already my fifth time in Valencia. Valencia has been one of my favorite cities for years now, especially because one of my closest friends, Mathilde, lives there – someone I met during an unforgettable trip to Mexico in 2022. And every time I did a transfer through Madrid, my heart told me to visit this place one day -and there was a special reason to this,

That journey changed my life in so many ways. Most of the people I met back then are still very close friends today, scattered all over the world, and I’ve been lucky enough to visit many of them since. I try to visit Mathilde every one to two years, and somehow I never really shared those trips online, even though they meant so much to me.

This friendship is something I deeply cherish. That’s exactly why it felt right to finally create a post about it — combined with discovering a brand-new city for me: Madrid. Two cities, two very different energies, but both filled with memories I’ll carry with me forever.

Day 1 – Eindhoven, Valencia & Castellon de La Plana – 2-11-2025

The morning started with an early flight from Eindhoven. Coincidentally, a close work friend of mine was on the same flight, so it was extra fun flying along as an IPB passenger. The flight took just over two hours, and before I knew it, I had arrived in Valencia.

After landing, I headed to another station to continue on to Castellón de la Plana, where Mathilde lives now. I slightly underestimated the distance… which resulted in two hours on the train — and on the wrong one as well. Oops.
That said, public transport in Spain is honestly great: affordable, efficient and well organized.

Once in Castellón, Mathilde took me out for dinner and treated me — so sweet. Together with her boyfriend, we explored some lovely spots around the city. Later that evening, I returned to Valencia, where I sat down by myself at Savoiardi and ended up chatting with some incredibly kind Italian women sitting next to me. One of those small, spontaneous moments that make traveling so special.

Day 2 – Valencia & Madrid – 3-11-2025

That morning, I met up with my Brazilian friend Tay for breakfast. Tay and I met back in 2022, during the trip when I visited Mathilde again after Mexico. It was so nice seeing her after all this time and reminiscing about those special memories.

We had breakfast at Brunch Corner, a lovely spot that now has several locations. Shortly after, it was time to head to the main station, as I was traveling on to Madrid. A big tip if you’re exploring Spain: trains connect major cities incredibly fast and comfortably. The high-speed train from Valencia to Madrid took only about 1 hour and 45 minutes and cost around €20.

Once in Madrid, I took the metro to my hostel, The Hat – a beautiful hostel in a great location. My roommates were from places like Colombia, Peru and Argentina, which made it the perfect opportunity to practice my Spanish again.

Since the open plans I had with an actor I met from Colombia that I met at a film award in Amsterdam a while ago didn’t end up happening, I decided to let things unfold naturally. That led to a spontaneous dinner with a super sweet girl from Medellín at a taco spot. Such a fun, unexpected evening, and exactly the kind of moments that make solo travel so special.

Day 3 –  Madrid – 4-11-2025

In the morning, I went for breakfast by myself at a cute and photogenic café called Loca Obsession. I found it on Google and thought it would be the perfect place to start the day slowly.

After that, I met up with a girl from Germany whom I’d connected with through the Hostelworld chat, and together we explored Madrid. It was such a fun day. We visited the famous Parque del Retiro, as well as the iconic Edificio Metrópolis. Madrid truly impressed me – it’s a beautiful city with so much to discover.

By coincidence, I later found out that a friend of mine from Colombia, Abraham – whom I met in Tulum back in March – was also in the city that evening. After spending the day with the German girl, I decided to meet up with him. We went out for dinner, he treated me to tacos, and afterwards we took an Uber to the Hotel Riu Plaza España 360 Rooftop Bar. The view was incredible – I can highly recommend this rooftop. Later, his best friend Valencia joined us, and it turned into a really cozy and fun evening.

Day 4 –  Madrid & Amsterdam – 5-11-2025

On my last day, I decided to change my ticket on the spot. Originally, I was planning to take the train back to Valencia and fly home to Eindhoven from there, but I honestly didn’t have the energy for that journey anymore. So I rebooked my flight and decided to fly directly from Madrid to Amsterdam – a decision I was very happy with.

The day started with breakfast at EatMyTrip Gran Via, a very popular spot where there’s often a line. Even better: the lovely German girl and an American friend joined me for breakfast.

Back at the hostel, I met a Dutch guy who was traveling through Europe. Since public transport to the airport was terrible with multiple transfers, he kindly offered me a ride. So sweet. Unfortunately, after a while, we ended up with car trouble on the side of the road.

To avoid missing my flight, I had no choice but to leave the poor guy and his car behind. After thanking him profusely, I ran – in heels, suitcase in hand – across the emergency lane to a gas station to order an Uber. What a story.

In the end, I made my flight just in time and boarded my plane to Amsterdam with Iberia. What a special trip. I would absolutely love to return to Madrid one day, especially when the weather is warmer – I’m sure there’s so much more to discover.

My tips for Madrid

  • Breakfast & coffee:
Start your day at Loca Obsession (photogenic and relaxed) or EatMyTrip Gran Via (very popular — go early).

  • Explore the city:
Take a walk through Parque del Retiro and stop by the iconic Edificio Metrópolis.

  • Rooftop views:
Visit the Hotel Riu Plaza España 360 Rooftop Bar around sunset for amazing views over the city.

  • Where to stay:
Choose a centrally located hostel like The Hat Madrid — perfect for meeting other travelers.

  • Getting around:
The metro is great for moving around the city; for the airport, an Uber is often the most relaxed option.

Mijn tips voor Madrid

  • Ontbijt & koffie:
Ga ontbijten bij Loca Obsession (fotogeniek & relaxed) of EatMyTrip Gran Via (heel populair — ga vroeg).

  • Stad verkennen:

Guatemala, one of the most heartwarming places I’ve experienced so far. A destination that still crosses my mind almost daily. And now in my top 5 favorites.

After being lucky enough to solo travel to so many beautiful places around the world, Guatemala instantly became one of the places that touched me the most.

The people, the atmosphere, the volcanoes, Lake Atitlán, the coffee, the food, UNESCO Antigua… this country has a soul that is difficult to describe unless you’ve experienced it yourself.

I met beautiful humans I still speak to from time to time, and I’m grateful to now call some incredible Guatemalans my friends.

I travelled here with my new camera, and I’m so thankful I was able to capture parts of this beautiful country through my own eyes, while also collaborating with amazing companies along the way.

I remember my eyes being teary while being on a boat at Lake Atitlan, and the moment I saw the Volcano erupt during the hike - one of the most challenging things I have ever done.

Some places impress you.
Others stay with you.
Guatemala did both. 🌋🇬🇹

Wait for the end! ✈️
Some women wait for love to start living.
I booked the ticket anyway.

Some of the most beautiful moments of my life happened because I stopped waiting, for permission, for certainty, for someone to come with me.

Solo travelling taught me that freedom can be lonely sometimes, but also deeply empowering. It gave me sunsets in countries I once only dreamed about, strangers that became memories, confidence I never learned at home, and versions of myself I would’ve never met if I stayed safe.

I may not have everything figured out yet, but I’ve lived. Deeply. Wildly. Internationally.
And honestly? That already makes me rich in life.

I know it’s not a possibility for every woman in the world to do this. Something travel also showed me over and over again.

Tulum, mi destino mágico 🌙🌴🌵
Some months ago I had the beautiful privilege to stay at @villa_hunab_ku multiple times - an absolute masterpiece and truly my aesthetic dream place in Tulum.

I remember sitting in the bathtub on the balcony of the master bedroom, the one I chose out of the five… in complete silence. Just looking out into the trees, feeling the warmth, and realizing how incredibly grateful I felt in that moment.

Grateful to be able to create a life where I get to travel, experience places like this, and even work with them. Something that once felt far away, and now feels like something I’ve slowly built for myself - step by step, by staying true to who I am and not letting other people’s opinions define me or hold me back.

At this villa, everything felt calm.
Safe. Peaceful. Grounded.

Waking up slowly, biking through Aldea Zamá to Nimenõ for my favorite coffee and breakfast just a few minutes away… those simple moments that end up meaning the most.

This villa is perfect for a group trip or something like a bachelorette, but I also loved experiencing it in my own way. Having the space to myself, inviting friends over sometimes, and just enjoying the balance between connection and stillness.

That balance felt very aligned with me.

Gracias en todos, @villa_hunab_ku 🤍

Tulum, mi destino mágico 🌙🌴🌵 Some months ago I had the beautiful privilege to stay at @villa_hunab_ku multiple times - an absolute masterpiece and truly my aesthetic dream place in Tulum. Safe. Peaceful. Grounded. Embracing Authenticity | Defending Truth on my Miss World (Netherlands) journey in 2021, my core values and mission

Dutch version below – Hello everyone, I would like to share my truth, vision, and story with all of you, including the beliefs I stand for. Why I’ve been blogging for 10 years, using Instagram to share my story, and why I decided to participate in beauty pageants like Miss World for my country. The truths and misconceptions about me and my participation in the pageant and standing up for my personal narrative and story. – Celebrate Your Authenticity: My Core Value, Standing up against Bullying, and Self-empowerment. “I signed a contract that does not allow me to be completely open about my experiences with ‘MWNL’.
