Japan travel diary | Solo trip to Japan part 2

02/12/2019 | Reageer

Hi all! Welcome to my never uploaded travel diary piece from my Japan trip in 2019. Update, this part was in my drafts for 5 years.. so my memory is not entirely clear in this post, and at times I will be speaking in the past or the present. I have changed the post date so that it stays on the correct timeline for the date I published the others. The prices I mention in the post are very different in 2024, and based on the prices in 2019.

This was the fourth day in Tokyo. On this day, I planned to meet up with amazing Anita from Sweden, who I’ve known for years through Instagram. She’s been living in Japan for years. We decided to have lunch together and visit Shibuya Sky, which recently opened in Tokyo. We both brought our cameras, which was perfect since we’re both quite active on Instagram (and I’m busy with my blog). Last year, we didn’t manage to meet up when I was also in Tokyo, but luckily, it worked out this time! And it certainly wasn’t my plan to visit Japan just once. 😉

I walked from my hostel to Shibuya Crossing, where we had planned to meet, and then we went for lunch in the same area. The lunch spot we chose was called In the City—highly recommended if you’re in the mood for a European-style lunch. After lunch, we visited Shibuya Sky, for which we had purchased online tickets for 1800 yen (around 15 euros) with a reserved time slot. The view was absolutely stunning! Out of all the observation decks I’ve visited in Tokyo, this is genuinely my number 1. If you want to capture amazing photos, this is the place to be. It is, however, always quite crowded.

Afterwards, we walked towards Omotesando/Harajuku to do some sightseeing. Harajuku and Omotesando are fantastic places for cool shops! If you’re looking for unique pieces of clothing, you’re in the right place here. We both enjoyed a large Matcha Latte at Streamer Coffee. FYI: coffee and lattes tend to be quite pricey in Japan… but as a coffee addict, I didn’t mind, haha. A latte often costs around 650 yen (5 euros). It was so much fun to catch up!

After walking around a bit more, I headed off to meet Michelle, a German student I met during my 2018 trip to Japan on the flight there. She took me to a place in Kabukicho, though I can’t remember the name—unfortunately, because it was a very cool spot! I ordered carbonara udon, which was absolutely delicious. After dinner, Michelle and I headed to an arcade, where we played some games together.

Hi allemaal!

Daarna zouden we gaan lunchen in dezelfde buurt.

This was my fifth day in Tokyo. In the morning, I had breakfast with my American roommate Hannah at our hostel. After breakfast, it was time for the next adventure of my trip: heading to Osaka by Shinkansen. I planned to stay about 4-5 days in the Kansai region before returning to Tokyo. The Shinkansen (Bullet Train) is included in the JR Rail Pass, which I mainly ordered and activated for this part of the trip. I had purchased this 7-day pass in the Netherlands and had it delivered to me before my trip. For my 2.5-hour high-speed journey to Osaka, I naturally bought an obento (Japanese lunchbox) from one of the nearby 7/11 stores. The ride was very pleasant, and I had a stunning view of Mount Fuji, which was incredibly clear.

Upon arriving in Osaka, I had to take a few different trains to reach my destination: Hostel Sakura La-an, recommended as a luxury boutique hostel and very popular. The staff was extremely friendly… although I seemed to be the only guest in the entire hostel, haha. It did feel a bit lonely, I must admit, but from experience, I know that can change quickly. I decided to head to the nearest covered shopping street to buy some snacks and drinks like Taiyaki (fish-shaped pastry filled with cream and sweet red beans) and Takoyaki (fried octopus balls). I ate those there by myself.

Back at the hostel, eating alone in the lobby, I soon met Matthew, a Canadian guy my age, who also found it hilarious that we were the only ones in the hostel. With no plans for the rest of the day, we decided to explore Osaka together as new friends. After randomly searching through the dark in the area where we were staying, we stumbled upon an incredibly cute family restaurant in a small alley. Here, we had cold dip noodles with a raw egg (a common addition in Japan, which, to be honest, often makes it even tastier) mixed with soy sauce. I would have loved to recommend this spot to you if only I had kept the business card!

Later that evening, back at the hostel, we met another solo traveler—an American. The three of us had a great time, laughing non-stop, and even participated in a live tea ceremony hosted by one of the hostel staff members.

Day 6 in Japan, I planned to meet up with my friend Yuka and her mother, who both live in Osaka. Yuka came all the way to my hostel to pick me up. That day, she and her mother would show me around Osaka. We headed towards the popular Namba / Dotonbori—a must-see in Osaka. A large group of schoolchildren even wanted to take a photo with me there, which was really cute! After taking lots of photos and strolling through the busy shopping streets, we visited a restaurant to eat Okonomiyaki. Okonomiyaki is a specialty from Osaka that I absolutely love! It’s like a savory pancake with lots of toppings, which you cook yourself on a hot plate. After our delicious lunch, the three of us took a Tombori boat tour through the canal in Osaka.

After saying goodbye to Yuka’s lovely mother, Yuka and I headed to Osaka Castle. Osaka Castle is one of the most popular landmarks here, featuring a small history museum inside. The castle also offered us a stunning view over part of the city. Following that, I treated Yuka to my favorite drink: bubble tea. Toward the evening, we went to a large shopping mall, where we ordered some traditional sweets before going out to dinner at the Sailor Moon Café—a themed restaurant based on an anime I used to watch as a young girl. Yuka had made the reservation for us.

The rest of this text is written from my memories.
Day 7 was spent entirely alone, with an exciting plan: a day trip to Kyoto! This city was high on my list, and the train ride from Osaka took only 30 minutes. Kyoto is famous for its stunning temples, breathtaking landscapes, and the traditional Maiko and Geisha culture. I was thrilled to experience this renowned city for myself.

My first stop was the impressive Fushimi Inari Shrine, with its endless row of orange torii gates winding their way up the mountain. After that, I ducked into a small restaurant to enjoy a bowl of Udon by myself—simple, but oh so delicious! Next, I visited the serene Bamboo Forest. The tall, swaying bamboo stalks and the soft light created an almost fairy-tale atmosphere. Of course, I couldn’t resist a sweet treat, so I picked up some sakura/matcha snacks.

While the city is beautiful, I found the distances between the attractions a bit far at times, making it a challenge to see everything in one day. And as I had expected, it was crowded at every spot. If you want to take lovely photos without the crowds, set your alarm for an early wake-up! But even with the busyness, it felt like I was walking through a magical place.

In the evening, I met up with Alberto from Canada, a fellow traveler I had met earlier in Tokyo. Funny enough, many travelers I knew were following the same route as me, even though I had planned my trip completely on my own. Together, we enjoyed a delicious Japanese meal and then had a coffee specialty at the cozy café Tanaka. We tried to facetimed Hannah, hoping to see her again, but unfortunately, we just missed her.

After a lovely evening, I headed back to Osaka solo, my mind full of new memories. Tomorrow held something special: I would go back to Kyoto with Yuka to try on a Kimono. I was really looking forward to it!

Villa Hunab-Ku @villa_hunab_ku 🍃

Imagine having your own dream villa at your favorite place in the world!

I had an amazing 4 night stay at this incredible villa. A villa perfect for a bachelorette, family visit, party or lucky me - for myself!

This beautiful place has 5 bedrooms. My personal favorite was the Bali master bedroom - which I chose to sleep in - and the Zen bathroom - A Japanese style bathroom with a yoga garden.

(Swipe) The Souls of Guatemala & Mexico Nov/Dec 2025 🪽🐦‍🔥 I’m beyond grateful to have a lot of close and also new friends and acquaintances from around the world and can call Tulum my second home.

If I didn’t go to México on my own back in May 2022, my life would have been completely different.

I’m extremely grateful (and privileged) to be able to travel the world as a WOMAN on my own. Although I still live with my parents as in my country it’s hard to afford housing as a single person - I count my blessings and use that form of ‘space’ in my favor as a form of freedom.

The more I travel, the more gratitude I preach and feel, but also realize how only a small group of people (mainly women) is able to go out and explore.

I started solo travelling back in 2017, and after 8 years, I and have a big worldwide group of close friends and lifechanging experiences.

One of the first things I have learned from travelling is that your soulmates don’t need to have a similar zipcode.

Thank you all for existing 🤍🪽

Haven’t been able to take pics with everyone or tag them! Still love you equally x

UNESCO world heritage surrounded by Volcanoes 🌋🇬🇹 Antigua - Guatemala

Solo in Guatemala 🇬🇹✨
I started my journey in the beautiful colonial city of Antigua, and it instantly stole my heart.

After a one-hour flight from Cancún and a short drive from Guatemala City, I arrived in a place full of colorful streets, historic architecture, lush gardens and the cutest coffee spots.

It felt surprisingly social for solo travellers, with boutique hotels and hostels everywhere. I felt safe walking around on my own, even early in the mornings and evenings, and everything is close enough to explore on foot.

I spent about three days here, spread out over my trip. Two nights at the beginning and one night at the end. The perfect place to slow down, recharge, and meet people along the way.

Would you add Antigua to your solo travel list? 🤍 #guatemala #antigua #laantigua #solotravel

I almost gave up during the first hour of this volcano hike, but what I saw at the top changed everything 🌋 90 second vlog! ⏰

One of the hardest yet most rewarding things I’ve ever done while traveling.
A few weeks ago, I hiked a volcano, and it pushed me far outside my comfort zone, physically and mentally.

We started the day slow, with breakfast in beautiful Antigua, before being transported to the headquarters to gear up and mentally prepare. The first hour was brutal: steep, cold, and way less oxygen. I was close to quitting. But with lots of breaks, support from the group, and a porter for my backpack, it slowly got better.

This hike is no joke. Bring plenty of water, snacks, layers, walking sticks, and altitude pills; the climate and altitude differences really test you. At basecamp there was no water or electricity, so you truly go back to basics. Cold nights, thin air, and warm cacao shared with people from all around the world after a 4–5 hour climb.

I was completely exhausted, so the only extra hike I did was a short 20-minute climb to the viewpoint, and it was more than worth it. Seeing the volcano erupt every 10 minutes was unreal. One of the most mind-blowing experiences of my life. Even at night, waking up in our shared cabin, we could see it glowing in the dark.

The next morning, after coffee and breakfast, we started the descent. About 2.5 hours down - fast, music in my ears, and honestly… pure fun.

This hike reminded me that the hardest paths often lead to the most unforgettable moments.

Would you try this? 🌋✨
Let me know in the comments.

(Swipe and read) This took me hours to create today ⏰ - 2025 in monthly flashbacks.

2025 was a year of growth, a year where I told myself after a big setback in 2024, to do everything I love. And even though it did not give me the results I wished for. I am proud of the things I did and those who I met along the way.

2025 was a year that looks perfect on the instagram feed (and nothing I post is fake!) - but never forget instagram is a highlight reel. Beyond a lot of beautiful highlights, there were a lot of equally deep lows.

I am far from where I want to be in life. I am still not out of a very toxic environment, I still don’t have my dreamjob, and I still live with my parents - single (which I enjoy very much)

But one day it will reveal why life happened this way. Setbacks are often stepping stones for bigger things coming. I learned that the environments I was in, are not the ones I should be in. Pageantry and carreer wise - it opened my eyes in how hard it is to fight a system which is politic and not made to be beaten.

I deserve to thrive in an environment with people that appreciate authenticity, people are respectful to each other and want to see each other win, instead of trying to destroy everything that mirrors their inner insecurities 🪞

May 2026 - a Leo year ♌️ - bring the change I am praying for. 🧿

Most incredible moment of 2025, and actually one of the most incredible of my life. Hiking the Acatenago volcano in Guatemala was one of the most challenging things I have ever done in my life, but the reward of pushing my own limits felt unreal. This climb and activity was on top of my bucketlist and for sure one of the most rewarding things of the year! 🌋

80 second solo travel vlog of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala - I had an incredible 3 night stay at @freecerveza - the best place to stay if you search for a social place around Lake Atitlan. 🇬🇹

Waking up to volcanoes on the horizon, vibrant villages by the water, and mist slowly rising from the lake… was pure magic 🌋

Every boat ride felt like a dream, every sunset a reminder to slow down. Guatemala surprised me, but Atitlán left a mark on my soul. 🌋💙

Embracing Authenticity | Defending Truth on my Miss World (Netherlands) journey in 2021, my core values and mission

Dutch version below – Hello everyone, I would like to share my truth, vision, and story with all of you, including the beliefs I stand for. Why I’ve been blogging for 10 years, using Instagram to share my story, and why I decided to participate in beauty pageants like Miss World for my country. The truths and misconceptions about me and my participation in the pageant and standing up for my personal narrative and story. – Celebrate Your Authenticity: My Core Value, Standing up against Bullying, and Self-empowerment. “I signed a contract that does not allow me to be completely open about my experiences with ‘MWNL’.
