Guatemala Travel Diary | Solo trip to Guatemala (Lake Atitlan)

07/01/2026 | Reageer

Hi everyone! Welcome to my latest Guatemala post. In this blog post, I’ll tell you about my four-day stay at Lake Atitlan. Subtle foreshadowing: one of my favorite destinations ever! I had a partnership with the Free Cerveza hostel in Santa Cruz. A small disclaimer: 80% of the photos in this blog post are from my own (and recently brand-new) camera or phone, and 20% were taken by Luz.
Hi allemaal!

Day 4 ( 13/30) – Lake Atitlan (Panajachel & Santa Cruz) – 23-11-2025

That morning, I headed straight from the Acatenango hike to Lake Atitlán by shuttle. The drive took around three to four hours and was absolutely beautiful, with constant views of volcanoes along the way. Guatemala is truly one of the most stunning destinations I’ve ever visited, and I’ll never stop saying that.

I slept for most of the ride, simply because I was completely exhausted after the volcano adventure, but the shuttle itself was very social and relaxed. Once we arrived in Panajachel, the main hub where boats depart to the villages around the lake, I withdrew some cash together with a few tour mates. Both the boats and Free Cerveza are cash only, so this was essential. We found an ATM at a supermarket close to the harbor, on the same street. Boat rides around the lake cost about 25–30 quetzales and get you from one village to another surprisingly fast.

On the boat, I met two fellow Dutch travelers, Skip and Jaap, and we immediately clicked. It turned out they were also staying at Free Cerveza, which honestly didn’t feel like a coincidence, as this hostel is widely recommended among Dutch travelers through word of mouth and group chats. It’s also one of the most popular hostels around the lake, so I was really excited to start my collaboration with them.

I stayed in a private little cabin with a view over the lake. By chance, Skip and Jaap were my neighbors in the cabin next door – which made it even more fun. I loved having my own space and found it incredibly relaxing to have my own place for three nights.

Lake Atitlán itself is a volcanic crater, located at over 1,000 meters above sea level and surrounded by several volcanoes — a truly special place. The atmosphere around the lake is very calm and laid-back, and even the boat rides alone feel like an experience. Scattered around the lake are small villages, each with its own unique charm. Exploring those villages was the plan for day two, together with Ella and the guys. Day one, however, I intentionally kept slow: staying at the hostel, soaking it all in, and working on my content.

Day 5 ( 14/30) – Lake Atitlan (Santa Cruz, San Marcos & San Pedro) – 24-11-2025

Day two started slow and peaceful in my little cabin. That morning, I met the lovely Luz, a Guatemalan photographer who lives at the hostel. She offered to take photos of me, and I was genuinely so happy about that, I really wanted to create some beautiful content during my stay.

After packing a few things for the day, I left around 9:30/10 a.m. together with Jaap, Skip and Ella, who happened to be staying in a hostel just a five-minute walk away. We took the boat across the lake to San Marcos and San Pedro.

The boat ride itself was, once again, absolutely stunning. Our first stop was San Marcos. We had breakfast at Circles Café, one of the most popular cafés around the lake. I ordered an XL cappuccino and a Snickers breakfast bowl, together about 70 quetzales, roughly €7,50. After breakfast, we spent quite some time wandering through the village and its small streets before walking up to the famous Eagle’s Nest. It’s a beautiful viewpoint where yoga and wellness classes are often held. While we were there, a yoga class was taking place, so we couldn’t explore the platform itself, but just being there was already special. The atmosphere even reminded me a little of Tulum.

Later on, we walked to a spot where you can jump into the water from about 10 meters high. I didn’t jump myself, but it was still fun to hang out there for a bit and watch others do it.

After that, we headed to San Pedro, the more lively, party-oriented village around the lake. We grabbed a small bite to eat, but honestly, the vibe wasn’t completely our thing. We also wanted to make sure we caught the last boat back, since boat services stop early in the evening.

That night, we had dinner at a small spot close to the hostel, just with the boys this time. I laughed so much, one of those simple, cozy evenings that end a day perfectly.

Onze eerste stop was San Marcos.

Day 6 ( 15/30) – Lake Atitlan (Santa Cruz & San Juan) – 25-11-2025

I had breakfast at the hostel that morning, and honestly, the kitchen at Free Cerveza is really good. The prices are great, and thanks to my collaboration I received 20% off everything. I ordered the breakfast burrito, which was hands down one of the most divine burritos I’ve ever had.

Luz was excited to do a photoshoot with me, and these photos have truly become some of my favorite travel photos ever. With her strong architectural eye, she managed to capture real gems. She suggested visiting San Juan, saying it would be such a shame if I skipped it, especially since she had lived there herself. Together with her, and a Mexican guy I met during breakfast, we headed there.

I’m so grateful she suggested this for my last full day in Atitlán, because the moment we arrived, I immediately saw how incredibly charming this village is. Our first stop was a coffee bar called Café San Juan, where coffee beans are roasted fresh in the shop itself. I treated her to a cappuccino, and soon enough we both had our cameras out, capturing moments in this small, colorful town.

After that, we wandered through beautiful artisan souvenir shops filled with hand-painted artwork and handmade crafts. One thing that really stood out to me was how often hummingbirds appeared in the designs, you see them everywhere. Luz then took us to a clothing store where everything is handmade by strong Guatemalan women. The proceeds support various good causes, including the women who create the garments. I received an explanation of the entire process in Spanish, and I couldn’t help but feel a little proud that I was able to fully follow along. I even got to try wrapping cotton myself.

To end the day, we visited a cacao museum, where we enjoyed a cup of cacao and a small bite to eat. I also picked up a few cacao souvenirs there. Along with coffee, cacao is one of the most important and widely sold products in Guatemala, and tasting it there, in that setting, made it even more special.

Day 7 ( 15/30) – Lake Atitlan (Santa Cruz, Panajachel & Antigua) – 26-11-2025

This was my last morning in Atitlán. Since Skip, Jaap, and I all didn’t have enough cash left to pay our tab, Skip and Jaap headed to Panajachel to withdraw money. The good news: they also picked up my cash, so I was able to stay at the hostel a little longer. I spent some more time relaxing in the sun and saying goodbye to all the lovely people I had met.

I look back on these days with so much gratitude and warmth. I’m incredibly thankful for such a beautiful collaboration with Free Cerveza. A huge thank you to all the amazing volunteers and staff, this place and its people will always stay with me.

Through the group chat Dutchies in Guatemala, I received a tip about shuttles from Panajachel to Antigua. One thing to know: prices vary a lot between tour operators, so it really pays off to do a bit of research. My shuttle cost only 125 quetzales (around €13.50) for quite a long ride. I arranged this by phone, but there’s also a small tour operator office next to Little Spoon where it’s easy to book shuttles.

What I loved about returning to Antigua was the atmosphere along the way. During the shuttle, which dropped everyone off at their hotels, I saw so many cute bars and cafés decorated for Christmas. It felt like a small, colorful Christmas village. Little churches, Christmas trees, lights everywhere. I’m so grateful I got to be there during this special time of year. Walking through Antigua felt like stepping into one of those Christmas villages my father used to set up at home – my heart feels warm just thinking about it.

I checked in at Flore Hostel, a lovely little hostel in Antigua, located in an area I apparently hadn’t explored before. How nice to still discover new corners of a city, even last minute.

What I find most beautiful about Guatemala is the people. They are incredibly kind, warm, and genuine. I never once felt unsafe or pressured by vendors. The warmth here is truly something special. I’m also deeply grateful to have made some beautiful friendships with women from Guatemala.

Day 8 ( 16/30) – Antigua, Guatemala-City, Cáncun &Tulum– 27-11-2025

Around 7:30 a.m., I decided to head to a café called Artista de Café – a big recommendation. The coffee was delicious and the place itself was incredibly cute. Walking through the quiet streets that early in the morning felt really special; Antigua is extra charming at that hour.

Back at the hostel, I enjoyed a small breakfast that was included. Around 8:45 a.m., it was time to leave for Guatemala City, where I would catch my flight back to Cancún. By the way – I was travelling with a small backpack and handbage, I left my suitcase at my friends in Tulum.

As incredible as this journey had been, I have to admit I was also looking forward to returning to Tulum, my second home, for another 12 days. I chatted with a few lovely people at the hostel, reflecting on what had truly been a beautiful and special trip. Feeling deeply fulfilled, grateful, and with a very warm heart, I look back on my time in Guatemala.

My driver’s name was Josué, and this is his number: +502 5194 1804. We had such lovely conversations during the ride, and it was a great opportunity for me to practice my Spanish. I paid 180 quetzales for the ride. He is a genuinely warm and kind person, and I truly wish him as many rides as possible.

Thank you for reading this unique travel diary! I look back on an incredibly warm time in Guatemala and am grateful that my trip didn’t end here and that I can return to Tulum to spend another long time with my friends. Do you have any questions about this special place? Please leave a comment.

POV: You get to stay at your dream villa in Tulum 🌴
Villa Hunab-Ku @villa_hunab_ku 🍃

Imagine having your own dream villa at your favorite place in the world!

I had an amazing 4 night stay at this incredible villa. A villa perfect for a bachelorette, family visit, party or lucky me - for myself!

This beautiful place has 5 bedrooms. My personal favorite was the Bali master bedroom - which I chose to sleep in - and the Zen bathroom - A Japanese style bathroom with a yoga garden.

Would you stay here with your friends?

(Swipe) The Souls of Guatemala & Mexico Nov/Dec 2025 🪽🐦‍🔥 I’m beyond grateful to have a lot of close and also new friends and acquaintances from around the world and can call Tulum my second home.

If I didn’t go to México on my own back in May 2022, my life would have been completely different.

I’m extremely grateful (and privileged) to be able to travel the world as a WOMAN on my own. Although I still live with my parents as in my country it’s hard to afford housing as a single person - I count my blessings and use that form of ‘space’ in my favor as a form of freedom.

The more I travel, the more gratitude I preach and feel, but also realize how only a small group of people (mainly women) is able to go out and explore.

I started solo travelling back in 2017, and after 8 years, I and have a big worldwide group of close friends and lifechanging experiences.

One of the first things I have learned from travelling is that your soulmates don’t need to have a similar zipcode.

Thank you all for existing 🤍🪽

Haven’t been able to take pics or tag everyone! Still love you equally x

UNESCO world heritage surrounded by Volcanoes 🌋🇬🇹 Antigua - Guatemala

Solo in Guatemala 🇬🇹✨
I started my journey in the beautiful colonial city of Antigua, and it instantly stole my heart.

After a one-hour flight from Cancún and a short drive from Guatemala City, I arrived in a place full of colorful streets, historic architecture, lush gardens and the cutest coffee spots.

It felt surprisingly social for solo travellers, with boutique hotels and hostels everywhere. I felt safe walking around on my own, even early in the mornings and evenings, and everything is close enough to explore on foot.

I spent about three days here, spread out over my trip. Two nights at the beginning and one night at the end. The perfect place to slow down, recharge, and meet people along the way.

Would you add Antigua to your solo travel list? 🤍 #guatemala #antigua #laantigua #solotravel

I almost gave up during the first hour of this volcano hike, but what I saw at the top changed everything 🌋 90 second vlog! ⏰

One of the hardest yet most rewarding things I’ve ever done while traveling.
A few weeks ago, I hiked a volcano, and it pushed me far outside my comfort zone, physically and mentally.

We started the day slow, with breakfast in beautiful Antigua, before being transported to the headquarters to gear up and mentally prepare. The first hour was brutal: steep, cold, and way less oxygen. I was close to quitting. But with lots of breaks, support from the group, and a porter for my backpack, it slowly got better.

This hike is no joke. Bring plenty of water, snacks, layers, walking sticks, and altitude pills; the climate and altitude differences really test you. At basecamp there was no water or electricity, so you truly go back to basics. Cold nights, thin air, and warm cacao shared with people from all around the world after a 4–5 hour climb.

I was completely exhausted, so the only extra hike I did was a short 20-minute climb to the viewpoint, and it was more than worth it. Seeing the volcano erupt every 10 minutes was unreal. One of the most mind-blowing experiences of my life. Even at night, waking up in our shared cabin, we could see it glowing in the dark.

The next morning, after coffee and breakfast, we started the descent. About 2.5 hours down - fast, music in my ears, and honestly… pure fun.

This hike reminded me that the hardest paths often lead to the most unforgettable moments.

Would you try this? 🌋✨

(Swipe and read) This took me hours to create today ⏰ - 2025 in monthly flashbacks.

2025 was a year of growth, a year where I told myself after a big setback in 2024, to do everything I love. And even though it did not give me the results I wished for. I am proud of the things I did and those who I met along the way.

2025 was a year that looks perfect on the instagram feed (and nothing I post is fake!) - but never forget instagram is a highlight reel. Beyond a lot of beautiful highlights, there were a lot of equally deep lows.

I am far from where I want to be in life. I am still not out of a very toxic environment, I still don’t have my dreamjob, and I still live with my parents - single (which I enjoy very much)

But one day it will reveal why life happened this way. Setbacks are often stepping stones for bigger things coming. I learned that the environments I was in, are not the ones I should be in. Pageantry and carreer wise - it opened my eyes in how hard it is to fight a system which is politic and not made to be beaten.

I deserve to thrive in an environment with people that appreciate authenticity, people are respectful to each other and want to see each other win, instead of trying to destroy everything that mirrors their inner insecurities 🪞

May 2026 - a Leo year ♌️ - bring the change I am praying for. 🧿

Most incredible moment of 2025, and actually one of the most incredible of my life. Hiking the Acatenago volcano in Guatemala was one of the most challenging things I have ever done in my life, but the reward of pushing my own limits felt unreal. This climb and activity was on top of my bucketlist and for sure one of the most rewarding things of the year! 🌋

80 second solo travel vlog of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala - I had an incredible 3 night stay at @freecerveza - the best place to stay if you search for a social place around Lake Atitlan. 🇬🇹

Waking up to volcanoes on the horizon, vibrant villages by the water, and mist slowly rising from the lake… was pure magic 🌋

Every boat ride felt like a dream, every sunset a reminder to slow down. Guatemala surprised me, but Atitlán left a mark on my soul. 🌋💙
