Many of my friends happened to be out of town this time, but luckily I got to spend three lovely nights with my family. Part of my family emigrated from the Netherlands to Canada in the 1960s. They’re now in their 80s, and travelling is becoming more difficult for them. So I decided to make the journey to see them again! ♡
Day 1/3 – Amsterdam, Ingersol & Toronto – 14-08-2026/16-08-2026
I spent the first few days with my lovely family in Ingersoll, about a two-hour drive from Toronto. They picked me up at the airport and had prepared the cutest, coziest guest room for me. It was so wonderful to finally see everyone again after two years! Together with my uncle and his wife Kelly, I spent a few lovely days exploring the area. The weather was absolutely gorgeous, so we made the most of it by going on little road trips through the Canadian countryside. We visited Woodstock, drove through charming towns and beautiful landscapes, and admired some stunning lakes along the way. I thought it was incredibly sweet of them to show me so many lovely places! But besides all the sightseeing, it was the little moments that made these days so special. Enjoying breakfast together, having coffee, catching up on life and, of course, eating delicious pancakes with authentic Canadian maple syrup! It genuinely warmed my heart to spend time with them and see how much love and effort they put into making my stay memorable. As my family is getting older, I truly hope I’ll have many more opportunities to visit them in the future. Perhaps even regularly if I ever get to fulfil my dream of flying long-haul! ♡ Off to Toronto! After one last beautiful family day, during which I also got to meet some more lovely relatives, it was time to head to Toronto. My family kindly drove me downtown, a journey of around two hours through the beautiful Canadian scenery. As I mentioned earlier, quite a few of my friends happened to be out of town during this visit. Luckily, one of my favourite travel friends was around! We originally met while travelling in Peru and instantly clicked. She’s just as bubbly, spontaneous and full of energy as I am, so you can probably imagine how much fun we have together! She shares a student house with some lovely girls right in the heart of Toronto, close to Kensington Market. And what a coincidence: her place was just a short walk from the hostel where I stayed during my first visit two years ago! The location was absolutely perfect, surrounded by cute cafés, restaurants and lively neighbourhoods. After my family dropped me off at her place, we headed straight into the city together. We hopped on the subway and streetcar, found a lovely spot for drinks and spent the evening catching up on everything. It immediately felt so familiar, almost as if we’d seen each other just yesterday. And right from that moment, I had a feeling that these days in Toronto were going to be incredibly special once again! ✨

Day 4 – Toronto – 17-8-2026
Our first stop was Found Coffee, a lovely coffee spot I had actually visited two years earlier! While enjoying a delicious cappuccino, I realised how special it felt to be back in Toronto exactly two years later. Especially because I could see how much I had grown as a person and how much better my state of mind was compared to my previous visit. Sometimes returning to a familiar place really shows you how far you’ve come!
The weather was absolutely gorgeous, and exploring Toronto in the sunshine felt magical! Another little bonus was the incredibly favourable exchange rate between the euro and Canadian dollar, making everything feel much more affordable than during my previous trip. Bless me!
We started with a lovely walking tour through the city, passing beautiful historic university buildings along the way. Afterwards, we hopped on the subway to Yonge-Dundas Square (now Sankofa Square), a lively square surrounded by tall buildings and giant advertising screens, almost like a miniature Times Square. Of course, we took some fun pictures!
Next, we visited the Distillery District, which I would definitely recommend! This charming historic neighbourhood is filled with beautiful red-brick buildings, lovely streets, boutiques and cozy cafés. We wandered around and stopped for another delicious coffee.
We also spent some time soaking up the sunshine in Trinity Bellwoods Park, enjoying a delicious donut and simply relaxing together. Sometimes it’s those little moments that make a day extra special!
Our next stop was the Toronto Waterfront, near the famous Cabana Pool Bar. Although we didn’t visit the pool club itself, we found a beautiful viewpoint overlooking Toronto’s skyline. Using my favourite camera lens, Ann and I took some gorgeous photos of each other, including what might be my favourite Toronto photos so far! ♡
After a wonderful day of sightseeing, coffee stops and photography, we headed home to change before going out for cocktails together. Later that evening, we curled up on the couch to watch Twilight. The perfect ending to such a lovely day with a dear friend! ✨
Bless me!

Day 5 & 6 – Toronto & Amsterdam – 18-8-2026/19-8-2026
Ann and I started our morning with a stroll through Kensington Market, which has remained my favourite neighbourhood in Toronto ever since my first visit two years ago. We stopped for a delicious coffee at Augusta Coffee Bar, where the coffee was amazing and the staff were incredibly sweet! Afterwards, we rented bikes to explore more of the city. We had also planned to try the famous Canadian BeaverTails, a delicious fried pastry topped with all kinds of sweet treats. Unfortunately, I was still so full from breakfast that I had to skip this Canadian specialty! Instead, we enjoyed a beautiful bike ride along the waterfront and around the Financial District. With another day of gorgeous sunshine, it was absolutely lovely. Toronto really is such a wonderful city to explore by bike! A spontaneous reunion with an old travel friend! In the afternoon, Ann had a work meeting, but luckily my Canadian friend Adam happened to be free! We originally met during one of my favourite trips to Tulum in 2024, and I hadn’t seen him since. When he heard I was in Toronto, he kindly offered to take me out. He treated me to a delicious lunch, and it was so lovely catching up after all this time! Since I had a feeling Ann and Adam might actually get along really well, I suggested meeting up with the three of us later that afternoon. Around 4:30 PM, we headed out together and ended up at Christie Pits Park, where we spent some time chatting and getting to know each other. I absolutely love those spontaneous moments when friends from different chapters of your life finally meet! One more evening or time to say goodbye? Later that afternoon, Adam had to attend a meeting, so Ann and I headed home to relax and watch a movie. Meanwhile, I started having serious doubts about my flight home. I was having such a wonderful time that I honestly didn’t want to leave just yet! Adam even sweetly offered to drive me to the airport later that evening. If I managed to catch a later flight, the three of us could still go out for another drink. I decided to see whether I could change my ticket to a flight departing around midnight, which would still get me home in time for work. Unfortunately, changing my staff standby ticket turned out to be a little more complicated than expected. I wasn’t familiar with Air Transat’s booking system, and my original Air Canada flight also appeared to be overbooked. Eventually, I found a KLM flight departing around 9 PM and decided to head home after all. Of course, I was incredibly grateful to get a seat, but a little part of me wished I could have spent those extra hours with Ann and Adam. Maybe we’ll just have to save that evening for another adventure! Luckily, Ann was coming to Amsterdam the following month, and I’m sure Adam and I will cross paths again somewhere in the world. ♡ One thing I’ve noticed during my travels is that the day I’m flying home often turns out to be one of the most enjoyable days of the entire trip. Why does that always happen?! Even though this visit to Canada was incredibly short, I look back on it with so much love and gratitude. I’m so lucky to have the opportunity to explore the world and to know such wonderful people who always make me feel so welcome and cared for. Toronto, thank you for the beautiful memories. Until next time! Toronto, thank you for the beautiful memories. Until next time! ♡ Extra tip: If you have more time, visit the Toronto Islands for beautiful views of the skyline!
