Indonesia travel diary | 3 week solo trip to Bali

Hi everyone! This past May, I had an amazing trip of over three weeks to Bali. Bali had been on my bucket list for a long time, and thanks to my flying colleagues, I found out that flying IPB via Dubai was quite doable. So, I decided to take the IPB route AMS-DXB-DPS with Emirates.

Hi allemaal! Deze afgelopen mei heb ik een fantastische reis van ruim drie weken naar Bali gemaakt. Bali stond al heel lang op mijn bucketlist, en dankzij mijn vliegende collega’s kreeg ik te horen dat het aanvliegen ‘IPB’ via Dubai prima te doen was. Ik besloot daarom de IPB route AMS-DXB-DPS te nemen met Emirates.

Day 1 & 2 – Amsterdam. Dubai, Denpassar & Canggu – 10-05-2024 & 11-05-2024

Coincidentally, my friend Demi, who lives in Dubai, was on the outbound flight as a crew member. It was great to see her there! After a super fun flight, during which I beat my neighbor on board at all the screen games Emirates offers, I arrived in Dubai in the middle of the night. Despite the crowds and short transfer time, and entirely out of my control and well-thought-out planning, I made my flight to Denpasar.

Upon arrival in Bali, I took a Grab to my hotel in Canggu. If you need a taxi, Grab, or other transport, there are dozens of vendors outside who will literally pounce on you. I recommend walking quickly to the Grab Lounge. Grab is an app similar to Uber, where you can easily book a scooter, van, or car. In the Grab Lounge, you can take your time to arrange transportation. I paid about 11 euros to Canggu, and since it was late, the ride took only 30-40 minutes.

Just before midnight, I checked into my hostel, Nyaman. I stayed in a shared women’s room with ‘capsules,’ allowing you to completely isolate yourself from others.

For those who don’t know, IPB is a form of travel for airline staff (stand-by travel). It was a perfect way to start my adventure in Bali!

Bij toeval was mijn vriendin Demi, die in Dubai woont, op de heenvlucht aan boord als crew lid. Het was geweldig om haar daar te zien! Na een super leuke vlucht, waarin ik mijn buurman aan boord versloeg met alle beeldschermgames die Emirates aanbiedt, kwam ik midden in de nacht aan in Dubai. Ondanks de drukte en de korte overstaptijd, en geheel buiten mijn macht en wel overwogen planning om, haalde ik mijn vlucht naar Denpasar.

Bij aankomst in Bali nam ik een Grab naar mijn hotel in Canggu. Als je een taxi, Grab of ander vervoer wilt, staan er buiten tientallen aanbieders die zich letterlijk opdringen. Ik raad je aan om zo snel mogelijk naar de Grab Lounge te lopen. Grab is een app vergelijkbaar met Uber, waarmee je makkelijk een scooter, busje of auto kunt boeken. In de Grab Lounge kun je rustig je tijd nemen om vervoer te regelen. Ik betaalde zo’n 11 euro naar Canggu, en omdat het laat was, duurde de rit slechts 30-40 minuten.

Vlak voor middernacht checkte ik in bij mijn hostel Nyaman. Ik verbleef in een gedeelde vrouwenkamer met ‘capsules’, zodat je je compleet kunt afsluiten van anderen.

Voor degenen die het nog niet weten, IPB is een vorm van reizen voor luchtvaartpersoneel. Het was een perfecte manier om mijn avontuur naar Bali te beginnen!

Day 3 – Canggu – 12-05-2024

During my solo travels, I always try to make some contacts in advance or join social groups. I often book my hostels through Hostelworld, which recently started offering group chats for your hostel, activities, or cities. This way, I quickly connect with other travelers from around the world.

That’s how I met Jet, who, like me, is also from Brabant. We decided to have breakfast together, and she picked me up on her scooter. On the way to Copenhagen, we got stopped by the police because I wasn’t wearing a helmet. We had to pay 250,000 IDR for this. I also recommend getting an international driver’s license to avoid fines for not having one.

Copenhagen was super busy, so we decided to go to a cute little place next door called Rise & Shine, which also has good coffee. Since I was very afraid of Bali belly, I took probiotic pills every morning, started taking them daily a week before the trip, and also drank Yakult from the supermarket and occasionally Kombucha. This fear is real, as I sometimes get sick from something I catch during the trip after I return home.

After this lovely brunch, we checked out some cute clothing shops and went to the La Brisa Market—a well-known but very busy market in Canggu. I found a super cute outfit there and made an outfit post about it.

After the market, we went to the pool at my hostel, chatted a bit, and in the evening, I joined the free family dinner at the hostel. It was a fantastic day full of new experiences and connections.

Tijdens mijn solo reizen probeer ik vooraf al wat contacten te leggen of mij aan te sluiten bij sociale groepen. Ik boek vaak mijn hostels via Hostelworld, dat sinds kort ook groupchats aanbiedt voor je hostel, activiteiten of steden. Hierdoor kwam ik snel in contact met andere reizigers van over de hele wereld.

Als Nederlander raad ik je aan om je aan te sluiten bij een WhatsApp-groep zoals ‘Dutchies in Indonesië’ of ‘Dutchies in Bali’. Er zijn talloze van deze groepen voor verschillende landen. Je kunt je aansluiten bij activiteiten, vragen stellen of anderen ontmoeten.

Zo ontmoette ik Jet, die net als ik uit Brabant komt. We besloten samen te ontbijten en ze haalde me op met haar scooter. Onderweg naar Copenhagen werden we aangehouden door de politie omdat ik geen helm droeg. We moesten 250.000 IDR betalen. Ik raad je aan een internationaal rijbewijs aan te vragen, want je kunt ook een boete krijgen als je die niet hebt.

Copenhagen was super druk, dus we gingen naar een klein, schattig zaakje ernaast, genaamd Rise & Shine. Ook een plek met goede koffie. Omdat ik bang was voor Bali belly, nam ik elke ochtend probiotica pillen, Yakult van de supermarkt en af en toe Kombucha. Deze angst is niet onterecht, want ik word soms na de reis ziek van iets wat ik heb opgelopen.

Na de gezellige brunch bekeken we wat schattige kledingwinkeltjes en gingen naar de La Brisa Market in Canggu. Het is een bekende maar heel drukke markt. Ik scoorde daar een leuk setje en maakte er een outfitpost van.

Later gingen we naar het zwembad in mijn hostel, kletsten wat en ‘s avonds deed ik mee aan het gratis family dinner van het hostel. Het was een fantastische dag vol nieuwe ervaringen en ontmoetingen.

Day 4 – Canggu – 13-05-2024

The morning kicked off perfectly with a delicious breakfast at Doheny, right next to my hotel. Later, my Spanish roommate Charlie from Barcelona joined me. It was wonderful catching up with her before heading to La Brisa, a fantastic beach club where I planned to spend the day with people I had invited through the Hostelworld group and Dutchies in Bali group.

At La Brisa, we shared a four-person bed, while two guys lounged on beanbags. The bed costed around 38 euros per person, but since Jet used half of my budget when she dropped by to eat with us, it ended up being just 24 euros for me. For that price, I still managed to order plenty of food and drinks! It’s definitely worth it for a spot like La Brisa. It was a blast hanging out with English Liv, American Olivia, Dutch Luca, Jelle and Delano, Irish Jacob, and of course, Jet. By inviting people from different platforms, I formed a great group of new travel friends. I can even reveal that many in our group have become closer friends and have continued to explore together!

In the evening, we headed to Luigi’s for a party, but due to jet lag and not being in the party mood, I quickly returned to the hostel.

Overall, it was an amazing day full of new experiences and friendships in beautiful Bali!

De ochtend begon perfect met een lekker ontbijtje bij Doheny, direct naast mijn hotel. Mijn Spaanse kamergenote Charlie, uit Barcelona, zou later bij me aansluiten. Het was super gezellig om met haar te kletsen voordat ik naar La Brisa ging, een geweldige beachclub waar ik een dag zou doorbrengen met mensen die ik had uitgenodigd via de Hostelworld-groep en de Dutchies in Bali-groep.

Bij La Brisa deelden we een bedje voor vier personen, terwijl twee jongens een beanbag hadden. Het bedje kostte ongeveer 38 euro, maar omdat Jet de helft van mijn budget had gebruikt toen ze even langs kwam om mee te eten, betaalde ik uiteindelijk slechts 24 euro. Voor die 24 euro kon ik nog steeds volop eten en drinken bestellen! Het is zeker de moeite waard voor een plek als La Brisa. Het was super gezellig met Engelse Liv, Amerikaanse Olivia, Nederlandse Luca, Jelle en Delano, Ierse Jacob en natuurlijk Jet. Door verschillende mensen van diverse platformen uit te nodigen, heb ik een leuk groepje nieuwe reisvrienden gecreëerd. Ik kan zelfs verklappen dat veel van onze groep hechter bevriend zijn geraakt en vaker samen op pad gaan!

‘s Avonds gingen we naar Luigi’s voor een feest, maar omdat ik last had van een jetlag en niet in de feeststemming was, keerde ik snel weer terug naar het hostel.

Al met al was het een fantastische dag vol nieuwe ervaringen en vriendschappen in het prachtige Bali!

Day 5 – Canggu – 14-05-2024

Yesterday, I had plans with almost everyone in the group to do fun things together for the upcoming days. It’s so nice to see how a bunch of solo travelers can eventually form a close-knit group. Although my experiences in Mexico remain unparalleled, Bali definitely takes a close second place. From the moment I arrived, I noticed how incredibly social Bali is and how people here are truly seeking connection.

Luca, Liv, Olivia, and I started the day with a lovely breakfast at a cute spot just a three-minute walk from our hostel. A nice bonus was that you get free access to the pool if you eat there. Although we didn’t use the pool, it was a nice thought. Afterwards, Luca, Liv and I went tot the Love Anchor market and after saying goodbye to some of the group leaving for the Gili Islands, we decided to take it easy and relax by the hostel’s pool.

Later, I really wanted to visit a cute clothing store with a hidden lunch spot overlooking a rice field next to the hostel. Delano and Olivia decided to join me. This place sold raw cacao to drink, something I absolutely wanted to try. Raw cacao is very bitter but incredibly good for you. Luckily, you had the option to make it a bit sweeter, and I chose that. This little paradise is called Munay. After enjoying the cacao, it was lunchtime.

In the evening, Jacob, Delano, Olivia, and I had Mexican food and made plans to meet up again in Uluwatu. It was a perfect ending to a relaxed and social day in Bali.

Gisteren had ik met bijna iedereen uit de groep afgesproken om de komende dagen samen leuke dingen te doen. Het is zo leuk om te zien hoe een groep individuele reizigers uiteindelijk een hechte groep wordt. Hoewel mijn ervaringen in Mexico ongeëvenaard blijven, verdient Bali zeker een tweede plaats. Vanaf het moment dat ik hier aankwam, viel me op hoe sociaal Bali is en hoe mensen hier echt op zoek zijn naar verbinding.

Luca, Liv, Olivia en ik begonnen de dag met een heerlijk ontbijt bij een schattig plekje op slechts drie minuten lopen van ons hostel. Een leuke bonus was dat je gratis toegang kreeg tot het zwembad als je hier iets at. Hoewel we daar geen gebruik van maakten, was het een fijne gedachte. Daarna gingen Luca, Liv en ik naar de Love Anchor-markt en nadat we afscheid hadden genomen omdat ze naar de Gili-eilanden vertrokken, besloten we het rustig aan te doen en te ontspannen bij het zwembad van ons hostel.

Later wilde ik heel graag een schattig kledingwinkeltje bezoeken met een verborgen lunchplek die uitkijkt op een rijstveld naast het hostel. Delano en Olivia besloten mee te gaan. Deze plek verkocht rauwe cacao om te drinken, iets wat ik absoluut wilde proberen. Rauwe cacao is erg bitter maar ontzettend goed voor je. Gelukkig kon je het ook iets zoeter laten maken, en ik koos voor die optie. Dit paradijsje heet Munay. Nadat we van de cacao hadden genoten, was het tijd voor een heerlijke lunch op dezelfde plek.

’s Avonds aten Jacob, Delano, Olivia en ik Mexicaans en maakten we plannen om elkaar weer te treffen in Uluwatu. Het was een perfecte afsluiting van een ontspannen en sociale dag in Bali.

Day 6 – Canggu – 15-05-2024

The morning began with a cozy breakfast with Olivia at the charming café Canteen. After a brief catch-up, she went her way while I checked into Kos One hostel. This boutique hostel felt more like a luxurious beach club or resort, although I was staying in a shared women’s room for 28 euros per night, which is relatively expensive for Bali.

The day was dedicated to relaxing at my new place, and later I would meet up with Maartje. Our meeting was an adventure in itself. In January 2022, during my first attempt to travel solo to Mexico, I met Maartje at the gate after my initial flight failed. We instantly clicked and exchanged contact information. Unfortunately, I was left without a seat again, my trip was postponed, and a series of setbacks followed, preventing me from traveling at all. But finally, in May 2022, I made the life-changing trip to Mexico, sadly without Maartje.

Today, over two years later, we were finally reuniting. At Penny Lane, one of the most beautiful cafés I have visited in Bali, we enjoyed good coffee, a delicious acai bowl, and great conversations. Later in the evening, we joined Danielle, a travel friend I met last year in Mexico City, for dinner at the Lebanese restaurant Zali. It turned out to be a wonderful evening filled with memories and new experiences.

Many things in life happen for a reason, and these encounters made my day in Bali unforgettable.

De ochtend begon met een gezellig ontbijt samen met Olivia bij het schattige café Canteen. Na een korte bijpraatsessie ging zij haar eigen weg, terwijl ik incheckte bij Kos One hostel. Dit boutique hostel voelde meer als een luxe beachclub of resort, hoewel ik voor 28 euro per nacht in een gedeelde vrouwenkamer verbleef, wat voor Bali relatief prijzig is.

De dag stond in het teken van ontspanning in mijn nieuwe verblijf, en later zou ik afspreken met Maartje. Onze ontmoeting was op zichzelf al een avontuur. In januari 2022, tijdens mijn eerste poging om solo naar Mexico te reizen, ontmoette ik Maartje bij de gate nadat mijn eerste vlucht mislukte. We hadden direct een klik en wisselden contactgegevens uit. Helaas bleef ik opnieuw achter zonder stoel, mijn reis werd uitgesteld, en een reeks tegenslagen volgde waardoor ik helemaal niet meer kon afreizen. Maar uiteindelijk maakte ik in mei 2022 de levensveranderende reis naar Mexico, helaas zonder Maartje.

Vandaag, ruim twee jaar later, zouden we elkaar eindelijk weerzien. Bij Penny Lane, een van de mooiste cafés die ik in Bali heb bezocht, genoten we van goede koffie, een heerlijke acai bowl en fijne gesprekken. Later op de avond sloten we ons aan bij Danielle, een reisvriendin die ik vorig jaar in Mexico-stad ontmoette, voor een diner bij het Libanese restaurant Zali. Het werd een super leuke avond vol herinneringen en nieuwe ervaringen.

Veel in het leven gebeurt met een reden, en deze ontmoetingen maakten mijn dag in Bali onvergetelijk.

Day 7 – Canggu & Seminyak – 16-05-2024

Today was my last full day in Canggu, as I’m traveling to Uluwatu tomorrow. One of my Bali must-do’s was to visit as many fun brunch and coffee spots as possible. This morning, I went to Milu by Nook, a beautiful place that I highly recommend. The staff, like everywhere in Indonesia, was incredibly kind and immediately gave me a seat with a garden view. Tip: try the peanut butter smoothie!

After this delicious breakfast, I relaxed at the hostel by the lovely pool. There, I met Hanna from Düsseldorf, with whom I had an instant connection. Coincidentally, she was also heading to Uluwatu, so we made plans to meet up there again. Kos One is quite social, though you have to put in a bit more effort to meet people compared to other hostels. However, even when you take some time for yourself, you quickly meet new people.

In the evening, I was invited to an influencer collab event in Seminyak. While getting ready, two English girls joined me in the bathroom to do their makeup, which I find to be one of the fun parts of being a woman. Before leaving, I had a matcha latte at Milk and Madu with Joanna, a girl from the hostel.

The influencer event was held at Sardine by K-room, followed by a party at Les Toilettes. The ride to Sardine took about 20 minutes from Canggu, and since it was late in the evening, there was no traffic. When traveling within Bali, I recommend doing so very early or late in the evening to avoid heavy traffic.

During the event, I met the lovely Cami from Mexico and Kylie from Hawaii. I spent most of the evening with these girls. We enjoyed shared dining with tasty cocktails and delicious dishes, followed by a fun party.

These encounters and experiences made my last day in Canggu unforgettable. I’m already looking forward to the adventures awaiting in Uluwatu!

Vandaag was mijn laatste volle dag in Canggu, want morgen reis ik door naar Uluwatu. Een van mijn Bali must-do’s was het bezoeken van leuke brunch- en koffietentjes. Deze ochtend ging ik naar Milu by Nook, een prachtige plek die ik je echt aanraad. Het personeel, zoals overal in Indonesië, was ontzettend lief en gaf me meteen een stoel met uitzicht op de tuin. Tip: neem de pindakaas-smoothie!

Na dit heerlijke ontbijt ontspande ik bij het hostel en het mooie zwembad. Hier ontmoette ik Hanna uit Düsseldorf, met wie ik een gezellige klik had. Toevallig ging zij ook naar Uluwatu, dus we maakten plannen om daar opnieuw af te spreken. Kos One is best sociaal, al moet je hier nét wat meer moeite doen om mensen te ontmoeten. Maar zelfs als je je terugtrekt, ontmoet je snel nieuwe mensen.

’s Avonds was ik uitgenodigd voor een influencer collab event in Seminyak. Terwijl ik me klaarmaakte, sloten twee Engelse meiden zich bij me aan in de badkamer om zich ook op te maken. Voor ik vertrok, dronk ik nog een matcha latte bij Milk en Madu met Joanna, een meisje uit het hostel.

Het influencer event vond plaats bij Sardine by K-room, gevolgd door een feest bij Les Toilettes. De rit naar Sardine duurde ongeveer 20 minuten vanuit Canggu en zonder file omdat het laat op de avond was. Voor reizen binnen Bali raad ik aan om dit heel vroeg of laat in de avond te doen om files te vermijden.

Tijdens het event ontmoette ik Cami uit Mexico en Kylie uit Hawaii. Met deze meiden had ik een shared dining met lekkere cocktails en heerlijke gerechten, gevolgd door een leuk feest.

Deze ontmoetingen en ervaringen maakten mijn laatste dag in Canggu onvergetelijk. Ik kijk al uit naar de avonturen in Uluwatu.

Day 8 – Canggu & Uluwatu – 17-05-2024

It was my last morning in Canggu before heading to Uluwatu. I decided to cherish my time here and ordered a delicious cappuccino and an Acai bowl with extra peanut butter by the pool. The food and drinks at the hostel were surprisingly good, so I enjoyed having my breakfast here. It was the perfect conclusion to my time in Canggu before moving on to Uluwatu.
