Thailand travel diary | 6 days in Krabi, Phangnga & Phuket part 2

14/09/2023 | Reageer

Welcome back to Part 2! I knew it was rain season, but I didn’t expect how extremely rainy it would be this whole trip. Minor spoiler; the rest of the journey was nothing but incessant rain! So take the rainy season in July seriously. Basically, we could do almost nothing today. This post is mainly pictures of the few things we could do, because we were literally ‘stuck’ in the rain. Furthermore, I think Thailand is a beautiful country with incredibly warm, sweet people! The hospitality and safety here are very nice.

Day 4 – Krabi – 19-07-2023

After a domestic flight together with Roos with Air Asia, we arrived in rainy Krabi. We slept in hotel Loy Chalet for about 40 euros per night, where we had our own chalet. We chatted a lot together because we don’t see each other very often, and finally had time to spend every day together. Due to the hysterical rain, we immediately decided to book a tour to get out of the area the next day – a boat tour.

Day 5 – Krabi – 20-07-2023

Roos and I booked a boat tour for this day. The goal was to go with a ‘long tail’ boat (as you saw on many instagram photos and I obviously had the goal), but once at the quay, we were told that this was not possible due to the heavy waves and weather conditions.

I personally thought this was really the highlight of the rest of the trip outside Bangkok. Luckily it was dry on the islands. The first place we visited was Railey Beach – and given the weather conditions we were certainly not the only ones who thought of visiting this beautiful place, so it was very busy and difficult to take pictures. I have not written down all the islands we visited, but I think it is a nice recommendation for a visit. So one of the few things that scared me was this boat! That’s because I capsized on my own in a rough sea in Colombia and just barely got off last year.

Day 6 – Krabi & Phangnga – 21-07-2023

Today, after breakfast, Roos and I planned a 2-hour drive to Phangnga with a private driver, I believe for 25 euros per person. We left for this place through an amazing boutique hotel I found on instagram that really looked like the dream! Unfortunately upon arrival, the rain later in the day was even worse than in Krabi. The hotel where we stayed is called Sametnangshe Boutique, I had been really looking forward to this. This hotel was bed and breakfast for about 100 euros per night – so still quite expensive for Thailand and the season.

This day we actually only had lunch all the way on the roof of the hotel and drank coffee with the beautiful view, and also dined in the hotel itself. By the way, these were European prices and there were virtually no restaurants/cafés/towns in the area, so Roos and I soon agreed that we no longer wanted to spend so much money on food and drinks and really had to go out for it.

Day 7 – Phangnga – 22-07-2023

This day started with a delicious a la carte breakfast. You could order anything from the menu until 10:00, as much as you want. I really liked this about the hotel. The rest of the day we watched movies, because we were stuck in the hotel due to the pouring rain. We had the most standard room with a bed and bathroom, so unfortunately we couldn’t do anything else.

Day 8 – Phangnga & Phuket – 23-07-2023

Today started with another breakfast and a decision to go to Phuket Old Town. We really had to get out. We went again by private driver (our taxi man is called Reem and was very nice!). Phuket old town is quite small, so after walking around for a few hours, rose and I were already exhausted. It strikes me that a lot of places nowadays look great on instagram, and a little less in reality. I think if you really want to do some cool things, such as beach clubs or rooftop bars, you better go to Phuket beach.

This evening we could finally use the lovely hotel swimming pool, because it had stopped raining. As an unpleasant surprise, while eating somewhere on the street – we found out that we had booked the wrong flights. We were forced to convert the tickets and pay about 70 euros extra per person to fly back to Bangkok tomorrow – one flight earlier.

Day 9 – Phangnga, Phuket, Bangkok & The Netherlands – 24-07-2023

Today we checked out. We had placed an order for breakfast late yesterday evening, so the staff – super sweet – made us a delicious breakfast box, which we could take with us to the airport.

About the hotel:
It was very noisy in the hotel, and when it rains you can’t do anything because there is no gym, indoor swimming pool or a nice lounge. I think if it hadn’t rained the experience would have been much better and the view even more beautiful. The hotel is best for visit if you come there with good weather. It’s a fairytale location and I really like the rooftop cafe anyway and the staff too. I also think that it is a very nice hotel, especially for couples. Breakfast was also a highlight. (This is also not a collab)

On board the short domestic flight to Bangkok, a KLM stewardess sat in front of us by chance. All 3 of us soon realized that we were airline personnel. Almost like you can feel and see it! She said that she would fly back to Amsterdam immediately after this flight, and that there were still 50 seats open. By the coincidence that we had to take a flight earlier, I would still catch this flight to the Netherlands. I myself planned to continue traveling solo for extra days if Roos would leave today, but abruptly decided to convert my IPB ticket and also fly directly back to the Netherlands.

The flight was very nice, and I got a seat right at check-in. I had the best chance to fly home today and so I did.

Thanks for reading my travel diary! Unfortunately this part of the trip was a bit disappointing due to the rainy season – but my best friend and I tried to make the most of it. I really thought the beginning of the trip in Bangkok was the highlight of the trip, and would love to come back one day and visit a rooftop bar.

As a tip – especially if you are traveling solo – I advise you to go to backpackers group apps (such as in Dutchies in Thailand), or to visit the chats if you have booked through hostelworld – because I find it very useful in this way to inform people in most destinations.

Guatemala, one of the most heartwarming places I’ve experienced so far. A destination that still crosses my mind almost daily. And now in my top 5 favorites.

After being lucky enough to solo travel to so many beautiful places around the world, Guatemala instantly became one of the places that touched me the most.

The people, the atmosphere, the volcanoes, Lake Atitlán, the coffee, the food, UNESCO Antigua… this country has a soul that is difficult to describe unless you’ve experienced it yourself.

I met beautiful humans I still speak to from time to time, and I’m grateful to now call some incredible Guatemalans my friends.

I travelled here with my new camera, and I’m so thankful I was able to capture parts of this beautiful country through my own eyes, while also collaborating with amazing companies along the way.

I remember my eyes being teary while being on a boat at Lake Atitlan, and the moment I saw the Volcano erupt during the hike - one of the most challenging things I have ever done.

Some places impress you.
Others stay with you.
Guatemala did both. 🌋🇬🇹

Wait for the end! ✈️
Some women wait for love to start living.
I booked the ticket anyway.

Some of the most beautiful moments of my life happened because I stopped waiting, for permission, for certainty, for someone to come with me.

Solo travelling taught me that freedom can be lonely sometimes, but also deeply empowering. It gave me sunsets in countries I once only dreamed about, strangers that became memories, confidence I never learned at home, and versions of myself I would’ve never met if I stayed safe.

I may not have everything figured out yet, but I’ve lived. Deeply. Wildly. Internationally.
And honestly? That already makes me rich in life.

I know it’s not a possibility for every woman in the world to do this. Something travel also showed me over and over again.

Tulum, mi destino mágico 🌙🌴🌵
Some months ago I had the beautiful privilege to stay at @villa_hunab_ku multiple times - an absolute masterpiece and truly my aesthetic dream place in Tulum.

I remember sitting in the bathtub on the balcony of the master bedroom, the one I chose out of the five… in complete silence. Just looking out into the trees, feeling the warmth, and realizing how incredibly grateful I felt in that moment.

Grateful to be able to create a life where I get to travel, experience places like this, and even work with them. Something that once felt far away, and now feels like something I’ve slowly built for myself - step by step, by staying true to who I am and not letting other people’s opinions define me or hold me back.

At this villa, everything felt calm.
Safe. Peaceful. Grounded.

Waking up slowly, biking through Aldea Zamá to Nimenõ for my favorite coffee and breakfast just a few minutes away… those simple moments that end up meaning the most.

This villa is perfect for a group trip or something like a bachelorette, but I also loved experiencing it in my own way. Having the space to myself, inviting friends over sometimes, and just enjoying the balance between connection and stillness.

That balance felt very aligned with me.

Tulum, mi destino mágico 🌙🌴🌵 Some months ago I had the beautiful privilege to stay at @villa_hunab_ku multiple times - an absolute masterpiece and truly my aesthetic dream place in Tulum. The truths and misconceptions about me and my participation in the pageant and standing up for my personal narrative and story. – Celebrate Your Authenticity: My Core Value, Standing up against Bullying, and Self-empowerment. “I signed a contract that does not allow me to be completely open about my experiences with ‘MWNL’.
