Mexico travel diary | 6th (Partial) Solo trip of 3 weeks to Mexico – part 1

17/02/2025 | Reageer

Hola everyone! This is already my sixth solo trip to Mexico, and yet this country continues to captivate me in ways that are hard to describe. The first time I came here in 2022, I instantly fell in love. Since then, I’ve returned time and time again, and now I’m embarking on another Mexican adventure. The last time I stayed here for such a long period was in 2022. Back then, I spent over 3.5 weeks, but for a different reason—I was with someone from Mexico. From that moment on, everything changed. My trips after that were solo, but never truly alone, as over the years, I’ve made incredible friends here. And even after six visits, this country still feels magical.
Hola allemaal!

Day 1 – Amsterdam & Tulum – 23-11-2024

My journey began with a KLM IPB flight (a standby ticket for cabin crew). The crew was really nice and even invited me to join them for dinner, but I decided to head straight to Tulum.

At the airport, I bought an ADO bus ticket (my go-to transportation in Yucatán) for about €20, and after a two-hour ride, I arrived in Tulum. I checked in at Mayan Monkey, the same hostel where I stayed during my first solo trip. I wanted to experience it one more time because my very first trip to Mexico left me with such amazing memories here.

It didn’t take long before I met two great girls in my female dorm—Katrin from Germany and Hana from the Czech Republic. We hit it off right away and made plans to explore together the next day.

Later that evening, Katrin wanted to check out the town and visit other hostels to extend her stay, so we walked around together. By chance, we passed by Meteora, a place where I’ve stayed multiple times and collaborated with over the past few years. Since I know the place well and have always had great experiences there, I took her inside and asked the staff if I could give her a little tour.

For the first time, I met the owner in person, who was incredibly welcoming. He even gave Katrin a personal tour and thanked me for my past collaborations. Before I left, he invited me to have coffee and catch up once I returned from my upcoming travels. Of course, I said yes.

Day 2 – Tulum – 24-11-2024

The next morning, we rented bikes from a place called Cacun for about 160 pesos and rode to Pancho Villa, one of my favorite spots on the public beach side of Tulum. If you plan to visit, be aware that the entry fee fluctuates a lot—it used to be free, then it was 62 pesos, and as of writing this, it has skyrocketed to 200 pesos (!).

We enjoyed Playa Maya Beach, took photos, and ordered their delicious nachos—highly recommended. Around midday, my friend Cyni called me. She happened to be off work early, so we arranged to meet for lunch at our usual downtown spot, La Negra Tomasa. This is, without a doubt, one of the places I’ve eaten at the most in Tulum—authentic Mexican food, high quality, and very reasonably priced.

I was so happy to see Cyni again, as she’s truly one of my closest friends and one of the main reasons I keep coming back to Tulum. We first met as solo travelers at Mayan Monkey during my first trip to Mexico in May 2022, and we’ve been close ever since.

Day 3 – Tulum & Bacalar – 25-11-2024

My last day in Tulum had arrived. Cyni suggested going to Cenote Vesica, as her boyfriend, Leon, was performing there that day. This place had been on my wishlist for ages. Vesica is a cenote club with a minimum spend of around €45 (1000 pesos). Luckily, we didn’t have to pay it, as many of Cyni’s friends (and now mine too) regularly perform as DJs there.

What an amazing place. We swam in the cenote (which is a real one, by the way), relaxed, and had a great lunch. Since I was continuing my journey to Bacalar later that day, I had already brought my luggage with me. Around 5 PM, my ADO bus to Bacalar departed—a three-hour ride. Tip: Book your ticket online in advance to skip the long lines at the bus station.

On the bus, I struck up a conversation with Richard from Australia, who was traveling long-term between jobs. We chatted non-stop for three hours, as there are moments between Tulum and Bacalar where you lose phone reception for several minutes—so having a good conversation partner is essential.

Coincidentally, we were staying at the same hostel: Hostel Che. Upon arrival, we met up with others we had encountered along the way, and since I still remembered the route from two years ago, I led the group there.

After checking in, I had only one thing on my mind: Mr. Taco. Richard and I decided to have dinner there. Mr. Taco is incredibly affordable, the food is served super fast, and it tastes amazing. I also highly recommend their passion fruit juice!

They have now opened an additional location within walking distance of Hostel Che, so you no longer have to walk all the way to Bacalar’s town center to enjoy some of the best tacos around.

Toevallig verbleven we in hetzelfde hostel: Hostel Che.

Day 4 – Bacalar – 26-11-2024

Today was my first full day back in Bacalar, and I couldn’t have been more excited! After two years, it felt like this place was calling me back—I had dreamt about Bacalar multiple times, and I kept seeing new and exciting spots pop up on social media.

I started the day with breakfast at El Mahati, a recommendation from a friend who had been there before. Such a lovely spot with a great vibe—definitely worth a visit!

In the afternoon, I had a collaboration with Boho Boats, owned by the same person behind Casa Balam, where I’d be working on another collab later in this trip in a different part of Yucatán. Rodrigo, the owner, had invited me for this experience, and I couldn’t have been happier about it. A boat tour on the stunning Lake of Bacalar is an absolute must.

The boat itself was beautiful, fully boho-style, and perfect for photos. Rodrigo knew the area inside and out and took me to some of the most breathtaking spots on the lake. Lake Bacalar is also known as ‘the lake of seven colors’ due to its underwater cenotes and varying depths, creating an incredible mix of turquoise and deep blue shades. A quick tip: the lake is closed on Wednesdays to allow the biosphere to recover.

The tour was pure relaxation, with drinks, music, and wine on board. But the funniest part? The looks on people’s faces from other boats as I drifted by alone on this stylish boho boat—it truly felt like a privilege! And to top it all off, the sunset over the water was absolutely breathtaking.

Day 5 – Bacalar – 27-11-2024

My third day in Bacalar started with a lovely breakfast with my Spanish roommate. We went to Ixchel, a charming breakfast café with beautiful tableware and incredibly friendly staff—such a great place to start the day!

Later, I joined a group from our hostel and walked to the lake, which was just a short distance away. We swam and soaked up the sun. Although the lake is officially ‘closed’ for boats on Wednesdays to help the biosphere recover, swimming is still allowed.

In the afternoon, I went for lunch with someone from the hostel at Ajal, a cozy spot in downtown Bacalar that I can highly recommend. I had a shrimp burrito and an energy-boost juice, both of which were delicious. If you’re looking for a great lunch spot, this is the place to go!

In the evening, like almost everyone in Bacalar, I headed to Yak Lake House, which hosts a fun party every Wednesday. Coincidentally, I ran into a fellow KLM crew member who was also traveling through Mexico and had actually been sitting next to me on the flight. If you’re ever in Bacalar on a Wednesday, Yak Lake House is definitely worth checking out!

Day 6 – Bacalar & Mahahual– 28-11-2024

My last day in Bacalar had arrived. Today, I was heading to Mahahual, where my collaboration with Casa Balam would begin. I’ll tell you all about it in my next post, but first: the journey there. I have to admit, I was a bit nervous. Not only had I never been to Costa Maya / Mahahual before, but the hotel was located 45 minutes beyond Mahahual, deep in the jungle with no phone signal. Thrilling, yet an unforgettable experience.

Fortunately, there is a regular bus connection between Mahahual and Bacalar, making it quite accessible. However, if you’re traveling to more remote areas in Mexico, it’s always smart to check in with locals who know the region and share your location. I had connected with a woman in Bacalar through the ‘Dutchies in Mexico’ group chat (great tip!), and she gave me an important heads-up: between Limone and Mahahual, there’s no phone signal for miles. She kindly offered to track my live location, which made me feel much safer.

Coincidentally, some of the girls from Hostel Che were also doing a day trip to Mahahual that day, and they offered to keep an eye on my whereabouts. It was reassuring to know that multiple people knew where I was.

Even though I fully trusted Rodrigo, the owner of Casa Balam, I was aware that I was traveling solo into an unfamiliar area, completely reliant on someone I hadn’t known for long. I personally find Mexico safe with the right precautions, but as in any country, common sense is key. Taking risks makes life exciting, but always listen to your gut feeling.

The day started with a final breakfast at Hostel Che, followed by a quick peanut butter smoothie from a small café next door. Then, I had lunch at Mi Burrito, a must-visit burrito spot. The owner even recognized me from two years ago! Tip: Try the shrimp burrito—so good!

Just as I was enjoying my last few hours in Bacalar, Katrin and Hana arrived, along with their new American friend. They wanted to join me for lunch and say goodbye before I left.

Shortly after, Rodrigo arrived to pick me up. Now that I’m writing this post after my trip, I can say he has become a trusted and true friend. It was incredibly thoughtful of him to drive me to Casa Balam himself, so I didn’t have to rely on public transport or taxis.

The drive to Mahahual took about an hour and 15 minutes. Along the way, we stopped at some local shops, where Rodrigo picked up a few things, and he gave me a little tour of Mahahual. He also introduced me to an American friend of his who owns a hotel and was preparing a Thanksgiving barbecue. We ended up staying for a while and having a meal together.

Mahahual turned out to be a hidden gem! If you have a car and want to explore more of Yucatán, I highly recommend it. At times, it even gave me Holbox vibes.

As night fell, we continued our journey to the hotel, driving deep into the jungle. The ride itself was an adventure, both eerie and exhilarating at the same time. But once we arrived, I was relieved to find that the hotel had excellent WiFi, allowing me to check in with everyone back home.

And the best part? The stars I could see from the hotel beach. I had never seen a night sky so clear, so infinite. Absolutely breathtaking.

Mijn laatste dag in Bacalar was aangebroken.

Ontroerend mooi.

My time in Bacalar and the journey to Mahahual were the perfect mix of relaxation, adventure, and a touch of excitement. From delicious breakfasts and fun encounters to a stunning boat tour and a thrilling ride deep into the jungle—every experience made this trip unforgettable. Despite the initial nerves about venturing into the unknown, this adventure turned out to be one of the most special ones so far.

Thank you all for reading my blog! I hope my experiences and tips inspire you for your own travels. In my next post, I’ll take you along on my stay in Mahahual and my collaboration with Casa Balam. See you next time!

Special story 🌷🇳🇱 My great grandfather who was a fighter in the resistance (Het Verzet) 🕊️

May 4th and 5th in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, May 4th is Remembrance Day, when we pause to honor all Dutch victims of war and the freeing of the country. At 8:00 PM, we observe two minutes of silence in memory of those who lost their lives in World War II and in subsequent conflicts and peacekeeping missions. On May 5th, we celebrate Liberation Day, marking the end of the German occupation in 1945. It’s a time for gratitude, reflection, and appreciation of our freedom. To keep remembering how important this day in history is and how freedom is a human right.

For me, this time holds a deeper, personal meaning. My great-grandfather was a prominent resistance fighter in Den Bosch, whose actions had an impact far beyond the city — he fought for all of the Netherlands. His stories live on in our family, passed down through generations. Among them are letters received at home from Prince Bernhard, acknowledging his dedication and service to our country.

From a young age, my father told me a lot of stories about his heroic actions for the country.

His courage and love for freedom are a powerful reminder of why we continue to remember — and celebrate.

A feeling of justice is literally in our DNA.

Tulum – a travel dream for many. I spent five wonderful nights here at @babel.tulum, waking up relaxed every morning in my own beautiful apartment. This stunning hotel is the perfect place to unwind, featuring a luxurious hot tub and steam room. Without a doubt, it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever stayed at. The aesthetics are absolutely amazing. Apart of that - I really loved the amazing people working there 🤍

Highly recommend this place for your next getaway!

(Swipe) 🍃 My hair was a paid actor 🍃 - Cenotes, one of the Mexican wonders in Yucatan. Visiting Cenote Atik for the second time. This Cenote is a beautiful one to visit. Which I highly recommend to you for your Tulum list. The pictures you can take here are gorgeous and you can even access the museum if you want. Keep in mind that the price has almost doubled (!) over the past two years and the cenote is partially man made. Apart of that - it definitely is worth a visit, especially if it’s your first visit to Tulum. Next to Cenote Atik, there are thousands of them to choose from, which is a must do for your Mexico travel itinerary 🇲🇽
